homeschoolig seminar notes

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

As i mentioned before i went to a homeschooling seminar on saturday and took about 16 pages of notes. i really wanted to share some of the things i learned, but i didn't have my note book with me to get everything right. SO here i'll start from the point that is at the top of my page.

"children are a blessing, not a burden" Psalm 127:35 "behold, children are a gift of the Lord.."

Historically children were trained to be included in all of the family household just as valued employees would be trained to be included in a family business or trade. Parents are to guard and Train...sometimes we push away children because they have become something we don't like. --This kind of appealed to me , or hit home because of my homeschooling experience and how much my mom and i fought, we were both hard headed, and we both gave up on me being home taught , because i had turned into something she didnt' like. WHen children are not trained to be included on the household team, they are forced to live like guests in their own homes, with no responsibility and no sense of identity or purpose. "walking with the wise" is God's basic method of training and instruction. The goal of parents should be that the childrens companions be wise. The key to child training is to include our children in our daily lives. sometimes People think to spend a day with your children. WEll rather than spendig time WITH THEM, allow them to spend more time WITH YOU. So you aren't lowering yourself, but you are bringing them up. "WALKING WITH THE WISE"

Disciplin helps children develope the self control they need to be included. The bible says." Hebresw 12: 5-7 " and you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons: My son, do not make light of the Lords discipline and do not lose heart, when he rebuke you, because the Lord disciplines those he loves and he punishes everyone he has called as a son/daughter. ENdure hardship as discipline . it is Gods training.

ANOther thing i realized that the speaker said was that , some children are spoiled when they are young, and finally the parents have lost contol and realize they need some senarios to grow. Then comes bording school , and other unneccessary things. SO the point is to not spoil, but to give senarios at a young age, which help them develope self control and patience...basically fruits of the spirit.

The challenge is to turn each child's heart to God, not just to improve his or her behaviour. Its easy sometimes to win a childs behaviour, but not the heart. And that can lead to a child rebelling as soon as he or she is out of your reach. The solution is not to lower Gods standards , but to make certain the standards are GOD'S and then appeals to the child's conscience before God. The greatest honour to give our children is to joyfully include them as valuable and respected members.

Great thoughts! We homeschool our kids but haven't been to a seminar in quite awhile. Thanks for the insight!
