I just went though this repair with my 1988 Taurus wagon. The new pump was low priced....but inside the fuel tank! It was loads of fun to change.....no explosions thankfully....my best advice is ...BEEEEE CAREFUL!!!!!!!!!

Mitch- tell me what, if any, parts you need (or questions you might have reguarding). I wholesale used fuel tanks (and pumps) and could probabally get one to you dirt cheap.

If you have questions about Ford trucks, you can go to the forums at www.ford-trucks.com

I've owned Fords for years. Had a conversation with a Ford mechanic a few years ago and he told me that you can prolong the life of your fuel ppump if you don't let the gas tank go below 1/4 full. The gas cools the pump and when the fuel gets below that point the cooling effect is minimal.

I just drove it home, my van has two tanks with a cross over switch, replacing that did not help. Finally found the reset button for the electric fuel pumps that I did not know existed.

Most fords have it- and that switch can be temperature defective. It also serves as a cut off in case the vehicle is hit. For others out there, it is a yellow button, generally located on the drivers side rear of the car on the interior (often trunk area and hidden behind the plastic trim). I have had the problem of a defective switch with an 88 Escort, the switch would cut off if the interior got too hot (the car would start if the windows were open but not if they were closed finally gave it away!) and not start on super cold mornings. Also, as a emergency fix (hehe) a Ford mustang EXTERNAL fuel pump can be installed on the fuel line if the in the tank pump ever goes bad- saves some hassels. Just be sure to FUSE the hot wire and to properly secure lines (double stainless clamps recommended) and secure fuel pump itself. The external pump came on 1983-1986 Fuel injected mustangs (and capris, t- birds, and cougars) and is mounted near the passenger side frame rail near the rr tire.
