AF Will Not Return?

I became suspicious of this sort of direction when Daria disappeared. MTV is definitely taking directions away from her prior level of standard as an innovator in the field of the arts. As far as I'm concerned rock music has been literally 'ruined' because of MTV's promotion of bands with low quality and high looks. Does MTV hold sole rights to the production of AeonFlux? Is this really the end for any further consideration to production? My heart sank when I saw this columns title.

There could be a silver lining here. Now that MTV Animation is officially kaput, maybe they will be willing to part with the rights for the show and sell them to someone who actually plans to do something with the property. Personally, I wouldn't mind at all if the Cartoon Network picked up the show and added it to their Adult Swim programming block. This probably wouldn't bring about any new episodes, but at least it would raise awareness of the show and increase the likelihood that someone else will start production of new episodes. Realistically though, I can't help but think that the series is dead and (unlike Aeon) will remain that way. It's too bizarre for major networks, too short for any kind of merchandising, and what are the odds that all the original talents involved with the show would all be available again. I'm sure all these guys are busy doing their own thing now, and an Aeon Flux diluted of its original talent probably wouldn't be the same. I'd still watch it mind you, but I doubt if it would be as good.

On a side note, are you realy a martial arts expert Peter, or was Drew Neumann just kidding when he said that?

In the current climate, it's unlikely that any movie or series about an anarchist terror-agent heroine will be approved for production or even rebroadcast. Maybe it's just as well as I wasn't too pleased with the direction in which the movie AF was being developed. The new characters I'm developing have, I think, just as rich potential for dramaturgical excavation as the Flux/ Goodchild dialectic without the taboo political undertones which make AF a rather difficult "property" to bring to market. Of course, I'd love to gain ownership and control over Aeon Flux and bring her back in a higher-end format than the original crudely executed series-- but don't expect it to happen any time soon.

Logo, I did attain my black belt in Tae Kwon Do back in high school, and was still practicing back in my CalArts days, which is when I met Drew. No doubt that is what he is remembering. But that was twenty years ago, and I've decided since then, that going through life in a state of constant alert in which you expect to be attacked at any moment was not healthy. I also discovered that dancing was a more creative and satisfying outlet for kinesiological expression. I no longer have fantasies about violent dark alley encounters. That's a good thing.

Peter: Regarding AF you said that if you could, someday you'd like to "bring her back in a higher-end format than the original crudely executed series". Are you referring to using new animation technology and taking more of a 'computer' approach (if that makes any sense) to the series? Please don't say there is a possiblity of a 'motion-capture' 3D animated AF return!

Might Denise Poirier and John Lee be considered for voices? *hint* *hint*

Peter, maybe you can clue me in on how the animation industry works. Now, I know you used to work at Disney, but since then have you been on the payroll of any other major animation companies or do you work in a freelance fashion only staying long enough to complete certain projects? Do most animators/directors work on a contract basis, or do they stick to one company for as long as possible? And what are the odds that you would ever gain ownership of Aeon Flux? Obviously we'd all love that to happen, but even if you did would you have to sell the idea to other animation studios, or would you start one of your own (if you don't have one already)? And what's this about new characters you're developing. I thought you were busy working on the Animatrix movie.

-- Logo (vosepherus@aol.com), November 16, 2001.

Stephen, by "higher-end format", I just meant a format without the budget, schedule, and content restraints of broadcast T.V. A theatrical feature film would be best, but home video might also afford a good outlet, as in the Animatrix project. I'm not a fan of motion-capture CG generally, though some integration of 2D characters and 3D backgrounds could work well.

Logo, animators, like people in other professions, may prefer the security of being employed full-time for large companies, or the freedom of choosing projects that suit them. Starting out, most young artists don't have the resume or the connections to freelance, so they tend to sign on with studios. Working at a studio means that anything written, designed or drawn as an employee is owned by the employer. This would also apply to projects developed independently, then pitched and sold to a company, as with Aeon Flux. For me to buy back the rights to AF would be expensive, but if an interested sponsor wanted to produce, say a movie using the character, and MTV had no plans of their own, a deal could be struck.

As I've posted on this board before, I've been developing an independent feature project which I've decided to put on hold while my Animatrix episode is in production. And I'm not going to say any more about either one... so, don't ask!

Sorry Peter. Honest. Your Aeon Flux was so good it's hard to let go and I guess we were basically on a 'stampede'...*backing off now*

-- Barb e. (Suesuebeo9@cs.com), November 17, 2001.

Thanks for the reply Peter. You know, if you *were* to open your *own* studio, I would recommend Canada as a location. Nature-wise it's beatiful, our money is like monopoly money compared to the US dollar, and apparently the gov't tax breaks you'd get for opening a production studio here would make it more than worth while! And *ahem* if you *ahem* needed any digital painters, scanners, line testers, compositors, or *cough, cough* a VP *ahem* I could help with that too ;)

provable control-unification of fundamental physical forces at a heretofore unattainable level of critical energies - AEON/TREVOR vis-a-vis quantum events (as/nÕt) transcendental machinations

Oh- hey, sorry I HEY, PETER! CHUNG! Wait up, dude!

Is it not so that Òtaboo political undertonesÓ are of the essence for AEON FLUX? A rhetorical question - but it shouldnÕt be.

MTV, huh...?

Integral to AEON FLUX is its relentless, unabashed interrogations into the order of sexual realpolitik and (at once) its fascination in the consequences conceivably sustained in the narrative subtext which may ironically reengage. For a critique of the political economy of the sexual object! Of a true postfeminist design for a dialectics of the libidinal.

OH - yeah, thatÕs what was the question! Either AEON FLUX should lose its ÒTABOO POLITICAL UNDERTONESÓ - or, OR MTVÕll just make like that REALLY WEIRD one - YOU KNOW, with the CHICK -- The One That Had A GIRL In It or-?

YOU MEAN THEY JUST WENT OFF AND DID THAT SO TO MAKE SURE SOME LURID PHENOMENON LIKE AEON FLUX CAN NEVER, NEVER AGAIN EVER HOPE TO HAPPEN?!

Naaaw. TheyÕre just miffed Ôcause WE made Ôem look STOOOO-pid, dude! Man, MTV is hip! TheyÕre cool! Why donÕt we jusÕ go on over there with a twelver anÕ a bag or some shit - they probably just think like me nÕ you mannnnnnn, just ainÕt like ROCK ÔNÕ ROLL, but Peter -- ! DUDE! LetÕs -- dude, what if they MAYBE LET US DO A BANNNNNNND!

YEAH! Just - you know - just like yÕknnnow not too weird or experimennnntal. And no chicks, or fags, dood ÔnÕ weÕll -- weÕll get on MTV again!!!

*Yawn* Oh, I'm sorry. Was that Xtremely witty, Xtremely post- modern, or Xtremely pro-active? OR ALL THR33?? Alas, I tire. I will no longer return for fear that you make me lose respect for a great series. The magic is gone.
