I'm thinking about buying this combination and wonder if I anyone has come around compatiibility problems.My alternatives are the 420ex or the more expensive 540ex.
any help greatly appreciated.

No problems at all. The 54 is an incredible flash. Also if you upgrade to a camera with ETTL you do not have to buy a new flash.
