i use an elan iie with the 380ex flash. i was wondering if i put a flash diffuser on, will the e-ttl automatically compensate or will i have the mess with the flash exposure option on the camera itself?

No problem. It is just like sticking a filter on a lens on a TTL metering body; no compensation is necessary on your part.
