Plane Crash in NYC Borough of Queens Jet Down Near JFK Airport

N E W Y O R K, Nov. 12 — A commercial passenger jet crashed near John F. Kennedy International Airport in the New York City borough of Queens at about 9:15 a.m. ET, and news reports said it was an American Airlines 767. Thick black smoke could be seen billowing above the crash site for miles and several buildings were said to be on fire. Emergency crews raced to the scene. The plane reportedly crashed near Beach 129th Street and Newport Avenue, in the Rockaways section of Queens. It was unclear whether the plane was attempting to land or depart from the airport.

The incident comes two months after two hijacked jets rammed into the World Trade Center in Manhattan killing about 4,500.
