EOS 33 doesn't work with Metz MZ 40 3i WHY????

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

Until a couple of month ago I used succesfuly EOS 50E and it's dedicated flash from Metz called MZ 403i.I decided to invest in a second body buying EOS 33(realising that eyecontrolled feature is useless for me). I espected to have same great results using the 33 with the Metz flash but all the pictures are severly underexposed. I vanished 5 films testing but no results. Unfortunately I adviced two friends of mine to buy the same system ( 33 + Metz MZ403i) and they have the same problem. Please help me. Anyone else experienced this so far? Any ideea is wellcome. All the best. Eugen

Eugen,

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles with the 40 MZ-3i. Given the expense of that flash, I'm sure you're sorry too. I've never tried that flash, so I don't have any remedy to pass on. The only non- Canon E-TTL compatible flash that gets good reviews for performance (actually, great reviews) is the Sigma EF500 Super, which emulates the Canon 550EX for half the cost. Build quality won't be as good as the Metz, but it works and does all the wireless flash stuff, too. Hopefully someone here can give you a solution to this problem. If not, hopefully you can return it or get some answers from Metz.

I use my EOS Elan 7E (EOS 30 in your country) with a Canon 420EX Speedlite and have had no exposure problems. I also used it with an old 430EZ in TTL mode with good results. I mainly shoot slides (Elite & Sensia) so an exposure problem would be painfully evident.

I would guess your EOS 30 is fine but is incompatible with your 3rd party flash. Prehaps Metz has a ROM update? When I bought my Elan 7E it wouldn't work with my 1999 Sigma 50 2.8 Marco. Sigma updated the ROM at no charge and it works fine (at least until I buy a new camera!).

Eugen, I recognise the problem. My MZ403i worked fine with EOS-5 and 500n, but not with the 30. At least not in E-TTL mode. Fortunately I lost only one roll of film due to this. As far as I know everything workes fine in A(utomatic) and M(anual) mode. After contacting Metz I replaced the adapter (3101) with the newer model (3102), now everyting works fine again. 3102 has no A-TTL, that's the downside.

Recently I saw a thread in another forum claiming that both these Metz adapters have problems in the Programmed Image Control modes together with the self timer. No issue for me since I always shoot in creative modes.

Enjoy your shooting,

As Far as I heard you need special new adapter for this flash. For A-TTL Canon SCA3101 Metz adapter is used, for Elan7(EOS33/30) SCA 3102 should be used, which supports E-TTL. I have no E-TTL compatible camera so I didn't checked, but this information has been shared many times in the forums
