cure for jungle rot?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

My husband was wounded in Nam back in '67, and if he gets a scratch or other minor wound on his lower leg it becomes a slow healing ulcer. We have found that soaking the ulcer with a mild solution of boric acid is a help, as is cleaning his leg with pHisoderm. I was wondering if anybody has come up with other solutions? Thanks Jackie jgossspecialtees@msn.com

What you're doing sure sounds right. Have you considered contacting your area Veteran's Administration Hospital? There may be someone there with advice for you as I'd think they'd have pretty extensive experience with that situation. I hope this helps.

Jackie, I had the same problem for over twenty years.. I went everywhere for help. I was told that I had a vitimin deficiency in my blood, the problem was, I wasn't getting enough blood flow to the lower part of my leg. I found a surgeon that knew what he was doing and did whats called a fem pop artery bypass on my left leg which increased the blood flow and also healed the ulcer. I haven't had any problems and that was over two years ago...Good Luck, Ed

Talk to your vet rep now, file for service related disability. They can refuse for dishonorable discharge or more than 60 days accumulated jail time, but not for the four other types of discharges. If your turned down, file again, and keep filing, keep filing and keepfiling, alert your congressperson, file until you get resultes. Been there, done that. Squeaky wheel gets the grease!!

Not to discredit his service or the possibility of a related health problem, but has he been checked for diabetes? Amoung other things, leg ulcers are a common diabetes-related ailment.

Regardless of his status with the military, I'd still contact a VA Hospital for advice if nothing else. Track down the VA docs individually if you need to and just ask them what they'd suggest. Most docs are helpful people if you get them one on one.

A friend of ours had jungle rot and went to a doctor here in Pa. All the doctor asked him if he was ever in the service in vietnam and he said yes. The doctor did not even look at it and gave him a prescription for it and so far is doing well with it.
