Thanksgiving plans and menus

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

What are y'alls plans for tThanksgiving? I read Melissa imaginary dinner, but what are you doing for real? Do you cook? visit? get take-out? Right now, I'm planning dinner for twelve-but who knows who else might show up?! On the menu:Turkey and dressing-I make extra dressing in the crock pot because every one likes it. Homemade rolls. Homemade cranberry sauce. Both sweet potatoes and plain mashed. Home grown green beans- and can't forget gravy! There will be a relish tray, and veggie dip tray and cheese and cracker tray- these for little ones who can't wait and need a little snack. There will be pumpkin pies and maybe an apple one, and sugar and spice cookies. I will also have on hand some instant falafil mix and "chicken like" powder gravy for any vegetarians that may show up. This is the same menu we always have, I like to look at nov. Ladies magazines for new ideas, but I have met with such resistance in the past that I don't do that anymore, -at least not for thanksgiving, I might use those ideas for another time.

My cousin and I are getting our families together for a much needed reunion. There will be about 12-18 depending on who show's up. We both LOVE to cook , and made our menu Monday. Here goes-Homegrown Turkey and Ham.(If I forget to mention everything is homegrown and homemade!) Mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, cornbread stuffing, greenbeans and ham hocks, corn pudding, fruit salad, cabbage salad, broccoli salad, garden salad, fresh veggie tray and dip, Rolls and cornbread. Dessert-Pecan pie, sweetpotatoe pie, pumpkin pie, apple pie, cherry cheese cake,Turtle cheese cake, carrot cake, coconut cream pie and last but not least oatmeal cookies for the kids.Between us both we couldn't stop. We have lumber jack men in our family and all of them are not fat, just big as trees. It's us women who have to suffer! We will get do our desserts at home and then meet the day before to get everything going.Oh, I forgot coffee, tea, fresh milk, cocoa, and hot cranberry cider drink.Everyone teases us about wanting everything to look like Martha Stewart did it, well, mine looks just as good and is just as good and doesn't cost 1/4 of what she spends. Lookout Martha, I'm on a roll...!!!!God Bless.

We haven't decided. My Mom is going to my brother's in Georgia. This is the first holiday season since my Dad died, so I'm just not sure what we will do. I don't want to go anywhere. Usually we have a very traditional dinner -- turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, candied yams, limas, rolls, pumkin pie, apple pie. Sometimes we have cole slaw, too.

Very traditional: turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, candied sweet potatoes, steamed broccoli, cranberry sauce, corn on cob, homemade sweet rolls, homemade pumpkin pie, banana pudding and for my grandaughters, chocolate cake! I'll also have veggies and dip for appetizers. I'll probably start cooking the day before but I'm fixing our dinner the Saturday after thanksgiving this year. We will probably be going to my sister-in-laws thanksgiving day but I always like to fix my own dinner too! Kelly, I'd love to have your cranberry sauce recipe if you don't mind!!! Thanks

I think this year I'll just roast a few turkey breasts instead of a whole turkey. It's just me and my 2 kids and last year we got tired of turkey before we could eat the leftovers up. I also make the traditional stuff, mashed potatoes, gravy, sage stuffing, green bean casserole, candied sweet potatoes, corn, and cranberry sauce(I cheat and buy canned for that)
