Recording from DVD to Mini DV Recorder

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Dirck Halstead : One Thread

Hi All,

Is it possible to record from my DVD player or computer DVD player to my mini DV camcorder (JVC GR-DVF21U) it's about 2 years old and has DV in/out. But I don't think my DVD player has DV out. Can I record somehow through the FireWire connection on my computer? I trying to record some kids DVD's for entertainment on a long flight.

Thanks in advance

I have a JVC GR-DVL9000 camera with a firewire in/output. According to JVC it is supposed to be capable of recording off the firewire but so far I have only been able to download from the camera to the computer but not the other way. It always records what the lens sees and not what comes from the firewire. I believe all these things are in their infancy, they sort of work... sometimes... Do like me, give it a few more years until the dust settles, then buy a new camera. By then all this will be standard bread and butter stuff.

if you are trying to record copy protected commercial material, the answer is no, the copy protection will prevent it. (there are some so called decrypting freeware programs out there that claim to allow you to decode them, but let's not go there). however, the fire wire connection is absolutely a two way connection and you can input data as well as export it. if you use editing programs like pinnacle studio 7 or adobe premiere, as i do, that's exactly what happens. i import data from my camera to my hard drive, organize it, and then send it back to my camera to record the final product. we have even used a direct cable between to minidv camcorders to duplicate a mini dv tape (requires a 4 pin to 4 pin cable) hope this helps

Im having the same problem. I cant record from my DVD-Rom drive to my mini DV. It is not copyrighted material. I have recorded from my PC to my DV, but not directly from the DVD. I have to capture video from a mini-DV, edit it then send it back to the camera. If anyone figures out how to go from DVD to DV, PLEASE post. I have everything set correctly...but when I try to press record on the mini DV, it is not recognizing anything coming from my PC.

I too need to find a desktop VTR for Mini-DV tapes. (VTR Video Tape Recorder) I have found two products, the JVC BR-DV600UA Professional Mini DV VTR for just under $2400 and the AG-DV2500 DV PROLINE VTR with DVCAM Playback and IEEE 1394 Interface for $1675. These are, well lets just say well out of my budget. I am using a JVC Mini-DV / S-VHS dual tape deck model SR-VS30U. I am, however, looking for a more portable DV VTR that doesnt cost an arm and a leg. Any additional thoughts?

I am having the same problem. I do a lot of editing and want to input scenes from dvd's I purchase while on vacation. I contated Pinnacle Systems and got the below feedback.....Now I don't know how this works, but this is what they said......"The Studio line only recognizes AVI and MPEG video files. if you want to capture a DVD video, you will need to transfer the video into your HD. It is a .vob file. Then, you can use a file converter and convert it into AVI or MPEG. Then you can import to Studio. Please if anyone does this and it works, email me at steveh167@aol.com, I would love to talk to you. Thanks and best of luck!

I am having the same problems. I am an independant film maker and during my degree I borrowed a friends' mini DV camcorder (I think it was Sony, and I've also managed it with a Panasonic) it was a little tempramental but with coming in and out of Premiere/Avid a few times the camera would finally pick up the connections and recorded really well. For Xmas I recieved a JVC GR-D33. The main reason I wanted it was for transferring films, it has DV in/out and will transfer films to my PC easily through DV/Firewire but won't recognise it to return them. I've tried it directly from Premiere and also my exported AVI file, but it's clear that it just doesn't see what the computer sees. Could it be the different brands? I've tried speaking to the people in the shops but to be honest they know less than I do and just read everything off the box - is there anyone who actually knows about these things??? Any help would be welcome as I'm desperate!

Actually just rip the DVD with DVD Decrypter and then burn it to a DVD there is no real reason to go trhough the camcorder
