Worst Routes

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Oklahoma highways : One Thread

Many of you have been talking about the things you hate about the turnpikes, but which of the free routes that you have been on have been horrible to drive, ie., bad surface, narrow bridges, too narrow, sharp curves, etc. Which roads have you found to be Oklahoma's worst.

OK 4 east of Smithville is horrible. The road was most likely designed in the first quarter of the 20th century, and other than surfacing, little has changed other than a couple of short reroutings (new Mountain Fork River bridge in the late 80's-early 90's for example).

If you want to see some bad roads, come to Houston where I live.

Worst Routes?

Yep, I too, have been across OK 4 though Smithville. I gotta agree, it's bad, but you outta see US 60 west of Bartlesville, past the Keepsake Candle factory (Radar Hill)in Osage County. It's fairly narrow, especially across Turkey Creek, and there's that big hill on past that. They keep talking about straighting it out, but all we are getting here is a lot of lip service. Of course what really makes it dangerous is the drivers that drive on it between OK 99 and Bartlesville. Some of these people shouldn't be allowed behind the wheel of any motor vehicle. But that too is another story. It just suffices to say that I grit my teeth and do a lot of praying when driving this streach of US 60.
