In the Feb 2001 issue of Railfan and Railroad, pages 38 to 49, there is an excellent article about the old ACL from Richmond to Weldon. On page 41 there is a map which shows an old alignment of the track from Garysburg to Weldon - it swings out to the east, then parallels the river to a location called Blakely.

I looked up Weldon on Topozone, at the 1:25000 scale, and there appears to be an old trail that follows this route, and what looks like the remnants of a brige well east of the present Hiway 301 bridge. Is this the old alignment of the ACL in Weldon?

It is, but it is from The Petersburg Railroad. It was charted in 1830 and completed by 1832 or 1833. It is the oldest portion of what was the Coast Line. Prince's book gives a brief history.
