Dennis Olson gets a job...

Dennis Olson

Since the lead psycho is going to be spending his time in a worthwhile pursuit (as opposed to moderating a stinkbomb), I wonder when the next split will be? His current moderators, Kris Gandillon, and Vipper are in financial trouble, and are looking for work also. Since Dennis probably won't be working on a new server to eliminate the dreaded "Server Busy" problem, they'll be looking for new digs. I'm thinking it will be a password-protected forum here.

Ohhh, how I wish they would make it a public forum! ;o)

Give Olson 3.5 months and he will be on the street again. Gandillon is in all the wrong areas now. Web conferencing, AV, and that sort of stuff is the game of big players and Enterprises now for SMEs. He better have a portfolio of apps to show anyone hiring in a big Corp.

I'll bet you're right on that 3.5 forecast.

Kris will probably end up on some sort of government subsidy for awhile. lol! I love the irony!

Kris was one of Ed's moderators at the original TB.

"Keep in mind since day one of Ed Yourdon's original TB2K board ALL of us who have participated as sysops/mods/admins have been unpaid volunteers some of who DO have a life outside TB2K.

Its not like any of us have the time, money or inclination to get tied up in all the legal machinizations that would be required to prosecute action against such types."

It has been a LONG time since I thought of all eight of the mods. I once knew who all eight were, but have since forgotten. If memory serves me right, not a lot of them were male. Do you remember if Hardliner was a mod and lived in MO?

Even stranger. On the thread about Dennis the Gross banning and blocking Lady Logic, UP JUMPS.......MR. ED.

I had to click on profile to be sure but he is registered to this latest edition of the Doom Zombie Homefront GNUs. Another scrap of proof that EY himself needs to add a few cards to his own deck.

In one of the strangest uses of "teaching by example" he tried to analog LL attacking the old TB-DoomersBeDem to a Kid Hacker invading Steve Gibsons web site and boxes. REALLY STRETCHING A BIT THERE TOAST- EY.

I also agree with Dennis' decisions and actions on this matter.

I can still remember spending many long evenings in the weeks leading up to the Y2K rollover, working simultaneously with three or four other sysops around the country, desperately trying to delete LL's automated "spam-bomb" attacks on the old Greenspun forum. Indeed, it was our limited ability to do so that ultimately caused us to move our "home" from Greenspun to Ezboard in March 2000 ... and from there, ultimately, to the present home that we all enjoy so much.

There have been some significant changes in the technology in the ensuing couple of years -- some of which have assisted the "good guys" in this battle, and some of which have assisted the "black hats". On the one hand, the very existence of blocking mechanisms and related features on this forum makes it much easier to prevent things from getting out of control; those features simply didn't exist on Greenspun (nor was Phil Greenspun willing to put them in), and they were somewhat limited on Ezboard.

On the other hand, the ability of hackers and so-called "script kiddies" to launch massive, coordinated "zombie army" denial-of-service (DOS) attacks has also increased significantly. Two years ago, only a tiny percentage of at-home Internet users had high-speed, always-on cable-modem connections; now there are millions of such users.

To get an idea of just how overwhelming these attacks can be, take a look at Steve Gibson's log of the battles he had with one such kid, which you can find at http://grc.com/dos/intro.htm .

Now here's a question for all of us to ponder: how can we point LL at Al Qaeda and OBL, where she could do some really useful damage?

Cheers,
Ed
