Governor Reveals Credible Threats to California Bridges

(KFWB) 11.01.01, 2:48p --

Governor Gray Davis warns suspended bridges in California could be possible targets for a rush-hour terrorist attack in the next week. He says there are credible threats involving four bridges; the Vincent Thomas Bridge at the Port of Los Angeles in Long Beach, the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges in San Francisco, and the Coronado Bridge in San Diego. Davis said the information came from several law enforcement agencies, including the FBI.

"We believe there is a credible threat that there will be an effort made between Nov. 2 and Nov. 7 to destroy one of those bridges," said Davis.

The governor is sending National Guard troops to protect the bridges. Authorities are also making ten times as many surveillance flights. Security around the bridges has been heightened since the Sept. 11 attacks and now involves personnel ranging from the U.S. Coast Guard to the California Highway Patrol. There are no plans to close any bridges at this time.

Davis revealed the threats at a press conference to announce his appointment of George Vinson, a 23-year veteran of the FBI, to the newly created post of special adviser on state security issues.
