San Francisco, Nov. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Officials have received a threat of a terrorist attack against the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and other bridges in California, Governor Gray Davis told reporters on a conference call today.
The state received a threat that someone may try to blow up the landmark bridge, which connects San Francisco with Marin County, during rush hour next week, Davis said. More than 100,000 vehicles cross the Golden Gate Bridge each day, records show.
Security has been beefed up at the bridge, and at the Bay Bridge, which connects Oakland and San Francisco, Davis said. Bridges in Los Angeles and San Diego are being guarded as well. Davis said the threat came from ``reliable sources.''
``I want to assure the people of California that we have taken every step necessary to ensure the security of the bridges,'' Davis said.
The threat comes days after federal officials told the nation to expect possible terror attacks in coming weeks. That warning followed the Sept. 11 attacks on New York City and Washington.
