Milk Processing Video

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I am looking for a video to show students about milk pasterization and homogenization. Many facilities will not let a group in to tour plants because of health safety, but could be seen by all through video.

Suggest you try calling a local dairy plant near you that you might have wanted to tour. Processing plant, I mean, that supplies to chain stores. I'm not talking a small outfit, but one that does distribution to most of a state or several states. Their consumer affairs people might be able to help.

Other than that, you might try talking to your local cooperative extention office. They work with the land grant colleges that have courses in Food Science in dairy processing (I once took a full semester course at Cornell called "Milk and Frozen Desserts" We got to taste test an ice cream formulation most weeks. :) In fact, Coop Ext. is probably a better bet than the milk plant, but you could try both.

Make sure to check with smaller processing plants also. I used to work at a business that also operated a dairy farm and processing plant. I used to do dairy tours that started in the dairy barns and ended in the dairy store. In the back of the dairy store was a viewing window so that people could see the pasteurizing and processing equipment in action. Sometimes the smaller guys need to do tours or other things of this nature as another way to stay afloat.
