EOS 100 not working...

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

Hello, As the subject says my EOS 100 is not working properly. It seems to have the famous problem of the sticky stuff on the shutter blades. I've found previous messages explaining how to attempt cleaning the shutter, however I'm still uncertain as to how much I can trust the camera again ( mainly because most of the time one thinks that nothing wrong is going on). Furthermore, that won't fix whatever produced this glue...

Would you fix it? I think I rather pay to repair this camera instead of throwing it away and buying a used one for tha same money. At least I know exactly its condition. I had it for 8 years now.

Is it possible to buy the part and replace it myself? Will it make any sense to do it? Or should I go ahead and buy an EOS 3?

Thank in advance.

Bernardo

To do the real fix, you have to replace the whole shutter assembly. I doubt you could do it yourself. It wouldn't be an easy job.

Cleaning it yourself is possible with either alcohol or lighter fluid and a lot of patience. I usually recommend trying this on the cheaper/older EOS 650's where the cost often exceeds the value of the camera, but the Elan is worth doing the real fix in my opinion.

I too have an old Elan/EOS 100 with the sticky crap on the shutter. Canon Hawaii told me they could fix it by replacing the shutter for $150. The going price for a used Elan/EOS 100 in the islands is $150- 200 so I purchased a new camera instead.

However, I cleaned the shutter with a Q-tip and lighter fluid. This job takes hours and I had to repeat it several times. The sticky stuff keeps coming back, but with smaller amounts each time. The shutter works OK still, but I wouldn't trust it on an important shoot.

Aloha,
