How to make a lean-to (Horses)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I am looking for directions to make a lean-to for my two horses. They are in the pasture 95% of the time. Should the lean-to be closed in on any paticular side to protect against wind? Any suggestions and/or plans would be appreciated.

The opening of mine face southeast. Keeps cool in summer and warm in the winter without wind. I have plans to build a movable shelter if you would like. 10 x 20.

My horses are in a lovely run in that my carpenter husband built. While I appreciate his work (it really is lovely), I agree with the person above who gave the simple..3 sides, slap on a roof concept. Keep it open to the south - it lets the sun keep it dried out - and situate it out away from the fenceline so that the horses can stand on all sides of it (in case of a wind coming from the south). Also keep in mind that simple will do...provided you don't mind doing frequent repairs. Otherwise, build it to 'hold an elephant.' Horses can be amazingly destructive, especially when they're bored!

I agree with Sherri about south facing to help dry it out. Also, make sure you situate it so water doesn't run into the shed.

We built a large shelter to hold several horses from a kit, and I find it is rarely used, evan on the coldest days they stand behind it or at the side, so whatever you have in mind don't spend a lot of money on it because it probably won't be used too much, just work out what size you want and build a simple frame and cover it with wood or metal sheets bought at most do it yourself stores, if using metal it would be wise to line it.
