Jersey Steer Vacination and worming question.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hello to all,I am wondering what vacination I should administer to my 5 month old jersey steer. He is a loner and on pasture that has never had animals on it.and also should I worm him.My neighbor didnt think I should have to do much since he is not around other animals other than chickens and told me to vacinate for pneumonia,is there such a thing as pneumonia vacine. The vet did not show up today in which I am glad since I seen the add for barnyardhealth.com in the latest issue of CS and think I can do it myself and save a buck.I live in central WI just in case that matters.Any help or tips much appreciated. Thanks Dave Smith

Dave, we raise a jersey steer for our meat and we have never vacinated for anything.

Dave, a good vet is invaluable for SAVING you money. They can tell you what problems you have in your area. Does little good for us to tell you what works here in the south if you live in the frozen north. Your steer did not come to you living previously in a bubble? Than yes it has worms, yes your property now has worms, cocci, and any other intestinal parasites the previous property had. Carried in manure in the hooves and walked all over the property is hoof rot, more worm and cocci parastites, and lots of other scary things. Wouldn't that 35$ farm call be worth it now, to find out that the guy with cattle next to you has been losing cows to black leg, with a simple cheap vaccination you don't have to worry about it. If a local cattleman uses the vaccination for pasturella pnemonia, wouldn't you want to then use it? With a mouth full of grain going to growing worms and the other mouthfull of grain going to grow your Jersey, wouldn't you want to get rid of those free loaders? When you butcher and the liver is full of liver flukes, going to be for some good eating! One day of sickness, anemia from worms or a bout of pnemonia is going to be a hell of alot more than 35 $ your vet charges! Vicki
