Im trying to make some VCD's. I have an All In Wonder Pro, 32 meg card. Soundblaster Live card, 850 mhz Athlon ABS computer, 256 meg ram, 40 gig HD,20 gig free . Using Nero 5.5.5.1 to burn The problem is that when I capture the video & audio, I see & hear it while capturing, but there is no audio on playback. Even in Windows media player, Nero, or anything else I have. Video but no sound. All my Audio settings appear to be correct, I can load other mpg or avi files and hear them. I Plan to play them in a home Pioneer DVD player. What am I doing wrong ? Is there a bug with ATI AIW & SB Live ? I would like to copy some old home videos over to vcd, maybe try some dvd copying later :)

Check if your ATI card is cabled to your sound card. This can be internal (check the installation manual) or external from the S Video out port on the ATI card to the Line in port on your sound card. Also check in Windows that the sound for Line In is activated and the sound for record is activated. Easiest way to to that is to double click on the speaker icon on bottom right of your screen and then use the options tab to run through and make sure nothing is muted.

A lot can go wrong to cause this. You don't say what your source is (TV, external VCR, etc.) nor do you say what version of MMC (ATI's recording software) you are using. MMC 7.1 has a problem with some cards where if you are trying to record sound through cables plugged into the "purple dongle" it won't work at all. ATI says this is fixed and I have been told that it is NOT fixed by people who use MMC 7.1. (I'm still at MMC 7.0 because of this problem.) If you are using the purple dongle for sound, try plugging your audio cables directly into the sound card's audio inputs. This usually works. There are also setups in Windows that control the audio. Make sure that your line in is not muted. Also, my SoundBlaster Live Plus! 5.1 Platinum has 2 different settings in the SoundBlaster window for audio inputs. I don't know how to describe it better than this, but they both have to be set to Line In. It seems that you only need one of them set, but they both have to be set to Line In.

Yet another possibility that hasn't been mentioned is whether you are capturing in multiplexed MPEG or not. I'm not familiar with the All- in-Wonder but many capture devices will give you the option of capturing multiplexed MPEG (video and audio in the same file) or capturing to two separate audio and video files.

The second method is preferred for DVD authoring since DVD uses separate audio files (to support multi-language). It's also useful when overdubbing or if you need to process the audio (for example, equalize it).

If audio and video are split, they must be spliced back together before being put on a VCD.

Panos is absolutely right. After getting your ATI card plugged into the SoundBlaster lin-in and selecting "line-in" in the ATI video player, you then have to: 1.) go into your audio properties (right click the little yellow speaker icon and left click "adjust audio properties.") 2.) In the Soundblaster set-up for "recording" you have to place a check in the box to select "line-in" 3,) Leave that audio properties/recording/lin-in selection window open when you are doing your audio/video capture to make damn sure it stays checked because I had a bug or a default setting somewhere in windows which kept deselecting "line-in" Hope this was useful to somebody somewhere.

I have the same problem. I've done what has been suggested in previous posts. Also, when I place the ATI TV software on mute well, I still here the sound, but the "closed caption" feature turns on like if the mute was actually activated.

Any futher help would be appreciated. The ATI website is not very helpful.

Actually, I don't have an answer, but a similar problem. Using SoundBlaster PC128D and Windows 98SE, I cannot get sound with mpeg files (captured or downloaded) using Media player or Quicktime. I've followed the previous suggestions but notice that the Video sound control (seen by clicking the speaker icon in the lower right) is dimmed (unselectable). Everything else (line in, CD, etc. is selectable). I've tried reloading CODECs and checking the settings that I can, but not luck. I do hear system sounds, wav and other midi's however. Any suggestions? Thanks!!

I had the same problems as reported above using a Sound Blaster Live PCI card. (Model CT4870) Through trial and error I found that the statements above were corrct for me. If I checked both playback and record on the Line-In setting, the VCR input would record both audio and video fine. But you had to reset these settings every time before you started recording. Somehow the settings would uncheck themselves. This gets to be a real nuisance. Then I put in a older Sound Blaster PCI card (Model CT5803) and checked the record option to line in and everything works fine, repeatedly. I'm sticking with the old card and have had no problems. I'm Running an AMD 1100 in an ASUS MB. Hope this helps.

I found the issue on that problem.

First, you need to plug the little white connector on the all in wonder (named j8 on my 9000 pro) to the TAD IN of your sound card.

Then, OPEN the windows sound controls, go to the recording setting, and set the recording device to TAD IN.

Then again, open your ATI TV prog. And you'll see the prob before your very eye ! the ATI prog will go check another device in the sound controls ! Check back TAD IN and launch the capture, TADAAAA it works fine now !!!

Output from sources plays audio fine. Capture anything and audio only comes out of one speaker. Triple checked all windows settings. Near the end of my rope. When I find the answer, will post. Good luck.

I have sound when viewing my TV, but not while recording. The volume control looks like it's linked to the AUX input in my windows audio volume control panel. The problem lies in your ATI MMC's default audio to use the AUX input. Open the Setup button in the TV player control panel. Run the Initialization wizard. Select Line-In as your audio source. This should solve your problems. I didn't have this problem until I upgraded to a new MMC. Thanks a lot ATI! BTW, I scour the Internet for a solution and found it in the manual. :>

I had the same problem with a Sound Blaster Live and ATI AIW PRO, but after searching and trying everything, I did the following: 1. Unplug the cable between the Line-in from the sound card AND video card. 2. Restart the computer (I don't know if this is necessary but I did it) 3. Start TV Tuner program. 4. Connect the cable in the video card, and then in the sound card. And, that's it. For my surprise, everything worked just fine! I wouldn't loose so many hours if I knew that such a simple thing could fix the problem. I hope this help some of you...

I have been fighting this same battle of no captured sound with the video on a windows ME pc and tried two different soundcards (soundblaster live and some really old connexant), and I started out using the ati AIW 9000 64mb pro card. After not being able to figure out why there was no sound, I changed out the video card for ati AIW 128 pro- thinking there may be compatibility issues somewhere because of the tv stuff in the 9000pro... I still got no sound while recording. finally i did figure out the trick with the sound properties changing themselves, so I showed my client how to check those things- which needless to say is a pain in the ass, and she shouldn't have to do that every time she wants to capture a few minutes of video from her vcr or camcorder- and she can't remember how to do it anyhow. I have had both those cards in different computers since then and do not have the same issue on windows xp...is this a windows me thing i wonder-? I have also tried multiple capture softwares, ati's junk, ulead, pinnacle 8, roxio dvd builder, and have had so much mixed luck with being able to record sound with video. since there are no hardware conflicts, im unsure what else could be causing the problem, I have also thought there could be a conflict with her webcam/microphone, but i doubt it. I cannot believe this is so difficult, video capture is not anything new. any thoughts on how to fix this permanently would be appreciated.

Found this site when researching a similar problem of my own - however, mine is the more severe situation where no audio comes through at all.

I have my AIW 7500 connected directly to my motherboard audio system. It is plugged into the "CD1" slot, and I moved my CD-ROM to "CD2". Previously, the CD-ROM had been plugged into "CD1" with the exact same cable with no problems, and now works still plugged into "CD2", so it doesn't seem to be a cabling issue.

I've gone through the rigamarole with the Volume Control and such, trying every setting and fiddling with the fader volumes between each. Nothing. I do notice a little bit of a hum when I select "Cd player" from the TV tuner initialization wizard, but nothing resembling actual sound.

Try this one. Open the TV player and right click somewhere on the "TV screen" then click on setup. Click on the Display tap and then click on Installation Wizard. Go thru the Wizard and make sure you pick Line-in and no Line-in2.

I was having the same problem, no sound in captured MPG files. I finally noticed that when ATI TV application starts, it 'listens' for audio on the TAD-IN input. (Try this experiment. Have the windows Volume control open, on the options-record. Select Line-In. Now start ATI TV, on my machine you can see the "Select" check box switch from LIne-In to TAD-in as ATI TV starts. It's magic! :-) Since nothing is connected to TAD-in, no sound). Manually switch the input selection back to LINE-in and you will get MPG files with sound in them.

The long-term fix as suggested by others is to run through the ATI setup wizard again and make it use LINE-in every time it starts. I don't know why TAD-in is the default!

I arrived to this web-site looking for a similar problem. I have a ASUS motherboard wieh a Soundblaster 128 PCI live and, on an other PCI slot, a TV card, plus a cheap integrated C-Media audio card deattivated on the BIOS. The funny think is that, while on windows 98 and linux I don't have problems, on windows xp I can't hear the microphone.. but it will works in the sound hardware test.. while the test is on, I can hear the micorphone.. as soon I press "next" and so "finish" I come ack in the silence world!!! The mixer settings are ok (both play-record).

I have the same problem with my soundblaster Live and the Hercules ATI 9800SE AIW.

If I play the recorded vcr files with the ati Player, I can't hera any sound. But I can hear sound while playing the TV player.

So, after I converted the CR File in the Media Player to MPEG4,the AVI File works realy fine with sound!!

So I thing it's asoftware problem with the ATI Player.

I had a problem With no Sound when recording video files but have solved the problem.

I have found that after setting the record volume on the sound card and then accessing the video record setting that the record volume in the sound card goes back to zero = no sound.

If you bring up the video record setting and while in this setting you then also bring up the sound card record volume and reset it to on thet everything works OK. Thank you for your help from this page Leao Padman.

Same problem (no sound while recording); I'm running a Celeron 800mhz- 100mhz fsb, 512mb ram, with an ATI AIW 32mb 128 pro and onboard audio. I have an audio jumper cable from the CD-ROM to the Video Card input and another Audio jumper cable from the Video Card output to the MoBo audio input. The fix for me was simple - Set the MoBo Audio properties to "Record, (Check boxes Sterio mix, Mono mix, Aux, Video, CD Audio, and Line in) do not check the Micro Phone or Phone in Boxes". Last but not least run the MMC TV Player/Recorder "Iniliatization Wizard" and set the Audio Input to "CD AUDIO". That's it and all works great, I don't even lose any frames during capture. Have fun all!

After troubleshooting my ATI AIW 9700 Pro for so long because of the inability to record with sound, I finally got it working.

In my case the key was to go to initialization and choose the Analog/Line setting.

Now I finally can record with video.
