Order of state streets on Potrero Hillgreenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco History : One Thread |
Does any one know why the north south streets on Potrero Hill that have states names were placed in that particular order?

I suspect somebody tossed the names into a hat. They're neither in order by date of admission, nor alphabetically by capitol city:12/03/1818, Illinois, Springfield
06/01/1796, Tennessee, Nashville
05/11/1858, Minnesota, St. Paul
12/11/1816, Indiana, Indianapolis
12/12/1787, Pennsylvania, Harrisburg
12/10/1817, Mississippi, Jackson
12/29/1845, Texas , Austin
08/10/1821, Missouri, Jefferson City
01/09/1788, Connecticut, Hartford
06/15/1836, Arkansas, Little Rock
05/29/1848, Wisconsin, Madison
11/21/1789 , North Carolina, Raleigh
05/23/1788 , South Carolina, Columbia
05/29/1790, Rhode Island, Providence
01/29/1861, Kansas, Topeka

Also, some of the numbered streets on Potrero Hill used to be named after California counties, at least until they were "connected" to the numbers coming out of the Mission District. Mariposa Street, located between 17th and 18th Street is a remnant of this.
