chicken (chick) poop

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hello everyone, I have a little chick who seems to be more trouble than it's worth. A few days ago it had a sudden attack of paralysis...and today it's fine. Now it has watery poop way too often. Once it even had a pinkish tinge. This chick is indoors right now-it is more of a pet...untill i throw it in the backyard-and i was wondering if anyone knew what sort of diet would help keep things a little more...uhm..solid. It just eats the "start and grow" formula as of yet. I raised another chick a few months back and it wasnt even half as stinky and as much trouble as this one.

Also, i was told that it is a silkie...but it has some feathes grown in on it's wings and crop..and they are not silkie like? It has five toes, though. And a few feathers here and there look really stringy. We call the chick "pugly" for obvious reasons.

Response to chicken poop

Try feeding it some bread soaked in milk; or, feed it yogurt, and see if that helps to firm up the poop.

Sounds like Coccidiosis to me too. If they have pinkish bloodiesh looking poo then it could be that. Especially if the chick has been losing weight and looking droopyish. If it is acting fine then you can top dress the food with a little rolled oats and that will make it a bit more uhm....solid! heehee! Oh...if it is Coccidiosis then you need to wash your hands thoroughly after handling the bird. I think that you can get the bacteria(?) too. Oh...if that is what it is you can get a Coccidiostat at your local feed store and just mix it into the drinking water and you might also find medicated feed helps like someone else suggested.

When I received some poults in the mail they had some pinkish poo from the stress. I knew who sent them, and they were healthy before the shipping. I gave them some milk with mash, I also gave some vitamins and surup in water for energy and a boost. I would be careful about giving something like a strong medicine until you know it isn't just stress. Keep seperate. :o) Good luck.

Forgot to add that my poults got better within a week when they were on this stress diet. :o) Good luck.

Sounds like coccidiosis to me too. Try adding garlic powder to the feed along with adding raw apple cider vinegar to the water (about 1/4 cup for your standard waterer). Works. If you continue to add the cider vinegar in small (1TBN) quantities you can help to prevent a reoccurance of this problem. Hope it works.

If coccidiosis. Cure by treating with Corid -Amprolium- (at the feed store) ~ and FAST if you want to save the bird. There is not enough Amprolium, in the feeds that have it, to cure the problem.

The paralysis leads me to believe it could be Marek's.
