Black German Sheperd looking for a family

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

Back in February, we came across a beautiful German Sheperd running back and forth across the highway next to a gas station. The clerk said that the dog had been there for a few days already and had a collar. We called ot her and she came right up. On her collar was her name and a phone #..because we are crazy, we took her home. The phone # had been disconnected (naturally). Since we already have an enormous Kuvasz named "Sophie" you can guess what this dog's name was. Of all the dumped dogs in the universe, we had to find another Sophie. This obviously was not going to play, so the Sheperd was re-named Gretta. She has taken to the name, although everytime we call the Kuvasz, they both come running....sigh... Gretta is housebroken, a terrific watchdog who only barks when there is a good reason; she is not a digger or a "mouther" or a big licker either. She is absolutely gorgeous, but missing a few toes on her left foot. The Vet says otherwise she is the healthy 2 year old result of a match between Black and Brown Sheperd parents. She is 99% Black with tinges of brown on her legs. Bad points? She hates to be left without people around..she chews "things" such as boots left within reach and a scatter rug once when church ran long. If the telephone rings more than twice in a row, she howls until you answer it and then stops immediately..(good for hard of hearing folks LOL) We like her alot but with my walking problems I have enough trouble dealing with three other big dogs and two cats..Gretta deserves a family with kids to play with..she loves cats and other dogs and seems to want to "play" with my chickens alot. One flew into the yard yesterday right in front of her and we thought it would be dog food, but she ignored it!!!!!!! Guess all the fun is in the chase???? If you know of anyone who wants a pureblooded Shepherd as a family dog, please let me know...no charge..you cannot sell love.. God bless.

There was a post about 5 or 6 days back on Countryside, someone in north Georgia was looking for a shepard to train for rescue work.

If the post from countryside doesn't work out you might want to try acmepet(http://www.acmepet.com) or do a search for german shepherd rescue in your state. Other than that the only thing I would recommend is to make sure she is spayed so she can't add to the pet overpopulation problem and screen people. Don't think for a minute that a family with children all saying how much they love your dog is necessarily on the up and up. The folks on the Rescue and Adoption board at Acmepet can give you lot's of pointers about that sort of thing. I really don't want to come across so negative but I've worked at a vet's office/animal shelter and It's really sad. I've seen beautiful dogs even purebreds that when the new wears off and the pet becomes a problem they don't care how much money they have invested. That's how I got my Aussie. Good luck, LaDena

Thanks Mitch..one of my friends who still hangs out over at CS sent me the man's e-mail..we corresponded the other day and he told me that although she sounds terrific, search and rescue dogs are often left alone for hours and Gretta sure wouldn't like that at all. LaDena, you make a valdi point there. We usually find an animal running loose because another person has been either careless or callous. We always get them spayed or neutered instantly and then look around for a family who wants the animal. The reason we have had her so long is that in our area, we have been unable to find a family who was willing to give us references from either their Vet or a minister or a boss or somebody. Years ago up North there was a sad story of a woman who cared for a stray Dalmation and put an ad in the paper for somebody to coma and adopt the dog. Three young clean-cut young men came around and said they would love to have the dog. Since they seemed so nice she gave the dog to them. They took that animal out in the woods, skinned it alive and then did target practice with it. Last I heard they got some serious jail time. I never want that to happen to any animal which has been in our care, so we would rather be inconvenienced by having too many animals than to give her to "just anybody". I passed up many strays in the last several months because reality says we have too many already and I cannot save all of them as much as I would like to.....we'll keep looking..Eventually we will find a good family for her or just bite the proverbial bullet and keep alot of huge dogs! LOL

I see you've been there and done that so to speak. I really do hope you find her a good home. Keep us informed. LaDena

Hello I have a 19(over 50 week old female German Shepard that would love to have some company when me and the wife are at work. She is extremely gentle and is getting destructive due to boredom during the day. We have a two year old son who LOVES to play with her and a newborn that has not been socialized just yet ;) Where are you located at? I'm located 35 miles south of Richmond, VA. Please email me if the dog is still in need of a home. PS. I live on 11.5 acres bordered by 1465.0 free acres so no fencing is needed. Thanks.

sounds like exactly what would work in my househould. I have an 11 yr. old little brother who in desperate need of a companion. my mother who also lives w/me is hard of hearing (since she was 19). We live in the country so she would have plenty of exercise not to mention the walks my mother goes on daily. I also have a six mo. old daughter coming up fast in the world hopefully she will love dogs as much as her mother and I do. Any dog we choose will be the family first.
