Response to looking for a cow

Vickie: Depending on where in S. In: You might give Jim Arnold a call, he lives around Poseyville, and milks Jerseys. We bought a nice heifer from him 2 or 3 years ago for my daughter's 4-H project. Also, try the Farmworldonline.com site: one of the (Amish) farmers over by Worthington has an ad in for Jerseys. (This is the breed we have so know more about them, but don't have any for sale right now.) Good luck with your search.

Response to looking for a cow

Make sure you ask if the cow is Johnnes tested before you buy, or get her tested yourself before you bring her home. This is becoming more of a problem on dairies, and some don't realize it's in their herd. We brought home a Jersey last year who turned out to have Johnnes. Luckily the dairy farmer is a nice guy who we've bought from before, and he took her back (to the sale barn.) While we had her she pooped all over everything in our barnyard and contaminated it. Johnnes can live in the soil for over a year. We've started testing our other cows, but it can take years to show up.
