What is the smallest breed of dog?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I want a pet dog that is the smallest possible breed. I have a 160 pound dog and 9 cats so I want one that will be cheap to feed and won't compete with space on the bed with the cats and dog.

I found this on a website about Yorkies:

According to the Guinness Book of World Records a Yorkshire terrier holds the distinction of being the smallest dog in history. This matchbox-sized Yorkie, when fully grown at the age of 2, stood 2 ½ inches at the shoulder, measured 3 3/4 inches from the tip of its nose to the root of its tail, and weighed 4 ounces. Owned by Arthur Marples of Blackburn, Great Britain, this elfin dog died in 1945.

Normal Yorkies weigh up to 7 pounds.

Officially the chihuahua is the smallest breed. I had one as an adolescent, and they are tough little dogs. They love to snuggle and don't like the cold but otherwise they have lots of spirit.

Chihuahuas are the smallest breed. I have 2 of the toy variety. One is short haired, the other is long haired. They have the sameparents but are from different litters. Their personalities are very, VERY different from each other.

Yes, but the question involved DOGS.

I will warn you that Yorkies are small but they have a BIG personality. We had two of them and "oy vey", what terrible little animals. Just kidding(in a way). We dearly loved them and we still laugh and cry at the memories. They are stubborm as mules and smart as the dickens. Their fur demands grooming or it gets terrible. We kept them clipped short for that reason. Just warning you.........

Yes, Don, Chihuahuas are dogs.

I guess I'm assuming that this is a joke question, or somebody havin fun, so I'll play along. Seems kinda obvious that the last thing someone who owns an 'extra giant' dog and nine cats needs in their home is a new family member with the description of "the smallest dog in the world"!!!! Since the poster's priorities seem to be feed cost and bed space, may I suggest you feed some of the cats to the very very very big dog, and pretend some of the remaining cats are little dogs.

Smiles,

you guys crack me up!

Probably the cheapest dog to feed and the one that is most tolerant when stepped on or rolled over on is a Stuffed dog!

I would think the "teacup chihuahua'would be the smallest, but would hesitate to get one so small with your resident crew,,,,enjoy CS sense of humor,,,(smile)

The Chihuahua, if bred true, is the smallest dog, but if that 160 pound dog steps on it, you could have some large vet bills or a dead Chihuahua. Think about what you're doing and use common sense!

Would a miniature Doberman be called a Doberboy?

There is a little chihuahua that shows up every day on our place (we call him Rico) who has eyes for our Bassett hound. Now THAT would be a wierd combo!!!!

Lurea, the Chihuahua is the smallest breed. AKC standard rule is that it has to be under 7 pounds for the show ring. Some Chihuahua's have been 2 pounds as adults.

Now my question is: Why in the world would you want so tiny of a dog in a household with a 160 lb dog?? Sounds to me like your asking for trouble. What breed is this 160 lb dog anyhow?. What is his temperment? Chihuahua's are 5 pound dogs with 160 pounds of fearlessness. Not a good combination, if your big dog also has an attitude problem. Settle for a dog which is closer to your large dog's size, then the two of them and the nine cats can snuggle in your bed at night, while you take up residence on the couch.

We have what is usually called a Mini-Pin(cher). She's got the croped tail and ears and if you look quick, you think you're seeing a regular Doberman.

However, I've coined the term Micro-Pin.

She weight 2 lbs, 15 ozs at one year old.

My lady used to raise and train full sized Dobermans. She says this little dickens had ALL the attitude of the big guys.

Lots of enjoyment - EXCEPT - when she decides a brigade of Comunist Shock Troopers have invaded the front porch in the middle of the night. Then she comes out from under the cover with red lights flashing, sirens blaring, claws raking, and generally trying to kill anything she can find. Usually it's just one of the outside dogs barking at the moon.

And it IS emabarssing to have to put a COAT on a dog.
