Looking for Maremma pup or child friendly adult

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We live on a 122 acre farm that is set back 1/2 mile off the road. We currently have sheep and goats that I would like to put in back pastures. We have lots of coyotes and though we have never lost anything, if we move them out of sight I have my doubts. We have read and spoken to many about Maremmas and other livetstock guardian dog breeders. We like the Maremma and are looking for one. We will also rescue an adult who has been raised with children. Yes, the dog will stay with the sheep and goats, but my children do chores and go in the fence.

JACKIE....COYOTES IN MY AREA HAVE KILLED DOGS.THE STORIES GO THAT A FEMALE COYOTE IN HEAT LURES THE FAMILY DOG INTO THE WOODS.SOME OF THE DOGS I HEARD ABOUT WERE GERMAN SHEPHERDS.THEN THE PACK GANGS UP ON THE DOG AND KILLS THEM.I BELIEVE OUR COYOTES ARE A BIT BIGGER THAN THEIR AMERICAN COUNTERPART. SO IF YOU GO WITH A DOG GET SOMETHING THAT HAS SIZE AND ABILITY TO FIGHT.THEY ALSO USE DONKEYS IN MY AREA WITH GOOD RESULTS. CORDWOODGUY

Where do you live? There is a guy near us who sells akbash maremma cross pups for 400cdn.If you are close to Ontario I would be happy to help you.I am the livestock evaluator for this area, and know these dogs, and what they do to coyotes, and yes coyotes can get the better of one of these dogs too,but how many times do they do their job, that we will never know about.
