HIE infrared and the EOS Elan 7, 3, and 1V

Has anyone had experience with Kodak's HIE infrared film and any of these cameras? When Canon announces their next full frame high megapix camea in about 6 months the first one is mine. In the mean time I need a camera to shoot with and later as a back up/odd film camera. Being a recent Nikon convert {F5} I'm worried about the IR frame counter. I would perfer the 1V will probaly get the 3 but at the moment the Elan 7 is my budget. Any sugestions and experince to share. Thanks in advance

You might try looking for a used (or new) 1n. That has a mechanical frame counter and just about every feature you could possibly need.

If an Elan 7 is your budget, you have a LOT of saving to do if you intend to buy a full frame megapix camera. I'd guess $5000+, but you'll have at least a year (maybe more) to save up for it!

I've used it with the EOS 3, it fogs just the bottom of the frame ends up and barely shows up above the sprocket holes. If it were slide film, the mount would hide it. I bought a used 630 originally for this purpose for about $200 and it works great as a backup. BTW, if you like IR, the Canon G1 with a Tiffen #87 filter is awesome. The subsequent digital offerings however may not be as good as they may filter more infrared than the ones available today. Isn't it amazing that we're already using the foibles of a 3.3 megapixel camera to our advantage??!!

All three cameras use infrared diode sprocket counters. Canon, however, claims that the 1v has a special design which prevents the counter from fogging film.

The 3 and the 7 don't have this feature, and so they all have the potential for fogging part of the image area of HIE film. The actual extent of the problem appears to vary from camera to camera.

I have an extensive FAQ on this subject, if you're interested:
