Tests Show Letter to Daschle Contained Anthrax

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A letter opened on Monday in the office of Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle contained a powdery substance that tested positive for the deadly anthrax bacteria, U.S. Capitol Hill police said.

Staffers exposed to the substance were treated with antibiotics, the office was promptly quarantined and a criminal investigation begun, authorities said.

Appearing at a news conference, Daschle said there were about 40 people in his office when the letter was opened and that no one appeared to be in any immediate danger. He didn't know how many people came into contact with the letter.

``I would say without equivocation our staff feels very confident about their circumstances,'' the South Dakota Democrat said.

``They have been given assurances that there is no immediate danger for them given that we were able to respond that quickly and as directly as we could,'' Daschle said.

The letter was opened at about 10:30 a.m. EDT by a female staffer.

``As soon as it became clear there was a suspicious substance in the envelope, we contacted the Capitol police and the capitol physician,'' Daschle said.

Lt. Dan Nichols of the U.S. Capitol Police said: ``There was an exposure when the letter was opened. The first field test came back as positive for anthrax'' and that a second test came back positive as well.

Dr. John Eisold, Capitol physician, said ``The appropriate people were identified who potentially could have come in contact with the exposure. They have been swabbed and they will be tested now to see if they do indeed have any of the spores.''

President Bush (news - web sites) said there may be a link between U.S. anthrax cases and Islamic militant Osama bin Laden (news - web sites), accused of masterminding the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States, but he said there was not any hard evidence of a link.

``There may be some possible link. We have no hard data yet but it is clear that Mr. bin Laden is an evil man,'' Bush said at the White House. ``I wouldn't put it past him but we don't have hard evidence yet.''

Indeed, it's all starting to make a lot more sense in light of this event. Attacks against the "liberal" media, Tom Brokaw, and now Daschle. Not suprising though, the scum-sucking Repugs are an even lower form of life than terrorists, and certainly have a history of doing some very dirty deeds.

I believe it's the liberals doing it to themselves so they can blame the right-wing wackos. This is the most logical explanation of them all.

Gary Condit?

Aaah yes, logical conclusion. Elementary my dear Watson! But it goes even deeper than that. The Repugnants have arranged it so that it will APPEAR as though the liberals are doing it to themselves so that they can blame the Repugs. Classic scapegoat decoy setup.

Yes Sherlock, I believe you have found the right answer, and Condit is behind all of it.

Indeed, it will APPEAR as though Condit did it. The Repugs have very cleverly framed Condit by setting up circumstantial evidence that will lead back to him. But as always, there is more than meets the eye. The truth will eventually be discovered and it will be clear that the filthy scumbag Repugs devised the whole scheme.

Correct. Condit, slime that he is, is not the target vector. Repugs set this up to LOOK like the Dems were framing the Repugs, when they were the source all along -- along with Osmo (AKA Osama). Osmo was formerly a small-time sax player in south Dallas who got pissed when he found out that Clinton could play saxaphone better than he could. Hence the hatred. Since Tom DeLay (the exterminator) had access to all sorts of nefarious microbes, it only stood to reason that BugBoy and Osmo would link up eventually.
