Does anyone know how to make homemade breastpads?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hi, I am looking for tips on how to make good homemade breastpads. I am not much of a seamstress but am tired of buying disposables and the pre-made cloth ones are too expensive. Thanks a lot.

I don't know stan, is it?

-- renabeth (renabeth@yahoo.com), October 14, 2001.

Stan, probably.

-- Don Armstrong (darmst@yahoo.com.au), October 14, 2001.

Agreeded Stan, how many do you raise per acre? What kind of Ph do they require? Is this a device for people whom have had surgery or does this concern feeding babys? I have no idea what the poster is talking about, maybe the poster can enlighten us with further info?

I am going to twist some more ice trays, in the dark, without running water over them.

Renabeth, Pick up a couple of cloth diapers and store brand ziploc bags, cut cloth in approx 6inch squares (pinking shears if you have them), or equal parts to use all of the diaper(you can do circles if it makes you happy, but squares work fine) Cut plastic 1/2 inch larger than cloth. On your work space layer 1 sq of cloth, 1 sq plastic then 2 or 3 layers of cloth. Pin loosely, and stitch around the edges and maybe 4 times across. Zigzag works best, but straight stitch will do. Trim edges. Make one pair and try them out, depending on your flow you can customize the layers of cloth. Hand wash in mild detergent, rinsing twice.

The following is courtesy of the Born to love frugal baby tips web site:

FREE NURSING PADS: Take an old cotton T-shirt, and cut it up into 6" circles. Place 3 to 6 circles on top of each other and sew two rows of stitching near the outer edge, about 1/8" apart, to prevent the edges from unravelling. These make very comfortable nursing pads, that don't slid around as much inside your bra.

I buy the so called "huck toweling" fabric - it's a loosely woven cotton. Trace around a crcle pattern all over the fabric, cut out, put 2 or 3 layers together, and stitch around with zig zag. I made a bunch ten years ago and have used them for nursing 6 babies.

-- Christina (introibo2000@yahoo.com), October 14, 2001.

Have you guys figured out what they are yet. They absorb the milk from one breast while the baby nurses from the other. And they help keep momma and baby dry at night. I guess if I had said nursing pads it would not have caused so much confusion. Thanks for the answers, folks.

-- renabeth (renabeth@yahoo.com), October 14, 2001.

I would agree with the cloth diaper idea (cut in fourths). This is what I used. Make sure they are the thick diapers.

-- notnow (notnow05@yahoo.com), October 14, 2001.

Renabeth, thanks for setting us straight. I thought they were something you wore when you were in-line skating.

Mitch! Quit standing there with the freezer door open. Who do you thinks paying for all that electricity! And tell Stan to quit playing with his chest. The neighbors are watching, for heaven's sake!

Just goes to show some men never grow up and are still nursing ! hehe

Oh, you people made me laugh!

-- Ardie/WI (ardie54965@hotmail.com), October 15, 2001.

OOHHHHHHhhhh,, I thought it was equipment for medival jousting or something

-- stan (sopal@net-port.com), October 15, 2001.

Ok..now that I have sopped laughing so hard I have a suggestion. I would not use any plastic in the home manufacture of nursing pads becuase then the skin can't breathe and you leave yourself open to a whole host of problems from that. Now I have to go look up Born To Love. I used to get her catalogue when I had my first child and loved it!

-- Alison in N.S. (aproteau@istar.ca), October 15, 2001.

Freudian slip there, Alison....sopped laughing?!!!!

-- Ardie/WI (ardie54965@hotmail.com), October 15, 2001.

To confuse the male masses more, I used mini pads or panty liners. They are never more than a dollar for the small box, cut them in half, and the good thing is they stick inside the bra. Once your baby is older you will stop all this leaking. Unless you have weak orifices, in which case we will have to put you down :) Vicki

-- Vicki McGaugh (vickilonesomedoe@hotmail.com), October 15, 2001.

Vicki , if I was an animal I would have been killed ! Couldnt deliver without a c-sec and leaked forever !

-- Patty {NY State} (fodfarms@slic.com), October 15, 2001.

To keep this forum fair and in balance tommorrow's topic will be athletic supporters, their care and maintance....

-- mitch hearn (moopups@citlink.net), October 15, 2001.

You guys are killing me! This was good for a laugh!

-- Nancy (nannyb@huntel.net), October 15, 2001.

The soft diapers, or soft tee shirt fabric would work great....also I would just use the plastic one the outside of the pad when I was going out somewhere....then around home just use the cloth ones where you can change them out before they soak through....

I used to leak the worse when I would get upset or be around a crowd so I would suggest the plastic on the outside of the cloth just for when you are around crowds....(of course it has been since 1981 since I breastfed the last one but I still remember what worked for me!!!)

(ignore these men.....if they nursed a baby one time, or had to go through one "monthly" they would be sniviling........LOL!)

-- Suzy in Bama (slgt@yahoo.com), October 15, 2001.

Ok Mitch do they come in different sizes or do you all just buy the extra large ones ?

-- Patty {NY State} (fodfarms@slic.com), October 15, 2001.

Or.....extra small??

-- Ardie from WI (ardie54965@hotmail.com), October 15, 2001.

You guys crack me up!!! I always just bought a box or two of the regular nursing pads and washed and reused to my hearts content. They were circular and quite comfy. Used the same ones through all three babies and my last two are 10 years apart (I don't get rid of anything). They worked great for me. My problem was always during um......shall we say the "what-caused-the-conception-in-the-first- place"!! (Oh my I'm blushing!) :oD

-- Greenthumbelina (sck8107@aol.com), October 15, 2001.

And, would you like to share what the problem was, Dear?????

-- Ardie from Wi (ardie54965@hotmail.com), October 15, 2001.

Mine would leak when other peoples kids would cry , excuse me miss want me to feed the baby for me{only kiddin} ? How embarassing .They would also leak if I just took my bra off .And long distance shooting , I could have won a trophy for shower shooting ! Is that enough for you guys?

-- Patty {NY State} (fodfarms@slic.com), October 15, 2001.

ok ok, BUT,, can you girls write your name in the snow?????

-- stan (sopal@net-port.com), October 15, 2001.

Stan, we can spell!

-- Ardie (ardie54965@hotmail.com), October 15, 2001.

There are somethings that should not be shared on this forum; right now it is looking like input from women; cows do not have this problem....why should women....?!

-- mitch hearn (moopups@citlink.net), October 15, 2001.

Well, since this is my first question on here I think I got off to a pretty good start. Stay tuned for my next controversial topic....Homemade birthcontrol.

-- renabeth (renabeth@yahoo.com), October 15, 2001.

Just kidding!

-- renabeth (renabeth@yahoo.com), October 15, 2001.

MEN!! Remember girls, that men are the beginning of all our problems. MENstruation. MENopause. MENtal anxiety. HeHe!

-- Jean (jat@ncis.net), October 15, 2001.

Hay Mitch, I think some cows do have this problem I've seen milk run down their legs when the bag was so tight it was hard to the touch, AND on tv I saw a dairy cow brassiere {the teats were showing} quite risque.....

-- Thumper (slrldr@yahoo.com), October 16, 2001.

Well..... you know Ardie - Kinda like the shower shooting thing that Patty (in NY) had going on - LOL I'll never forget the first time it happened. Let's just say both Hubby and I were NOT expecting it! LOL

-- Greenthumbelina (sck8107@aol.com), October 16, 2001.

I'm still waiting for the athletic supporter thread .And by the way how many guys really need one ? hehe

-- Patty {NY State} (fodfarms@slic.com), October 16, 2001.

Hee hee, LOL

renabeth, I used prefolded cloth diapers to make nursing pads. Cut three circles from the middle strip, bind with double bias tape and voila! you are done. Save the left over side pieces for an emergeny kit in the car or house. You might be able to find the diapers at a thrift store so that you are not paying full price for something you are going to cut up.

as to the guys....you obviously think you have something to add to this post or you wouldn't keep reading even after you know what we're talking about. ;)

-- LBD (lavenderbluedilly@hotmail.com), October 17, 2001.

Greenthumbelina, I must have missed that!

-- Ardie/WI (ardie54965@hotmail.com), October 17, 2001.

Stan, not only can we ladies write our names in the snow, but in doing so we've made snow ice cream! What have you made?!

-- Sheryl in Me (radams@sacoriver.net), October 17, 2001.

Patty, see how much more fun life would be if Joel were still around. Now we would have been able to get a RISE out of him :) UMMMMM with this thread. Vicki

-- Vicki McGaugh (vickilonesomedoe@hotmail.com), October 18, 2001.

This is just cracking me up .I am so glad we can still have fun , not only with whats going on on the forum and in real life.

-- Patty {NY State} (fodfarms@slic.com), October 18, 2001.

Instead of joel you should try greenbean man [ loved that answer he gave about women one time].
