Taliban 'to attack British bases'

by Keith Dovkants in Islamabad The Taliban leadership has ordered attacks on British and American military bases in reprisal for the air strikes on Afghanistan, it was reported here today.

According to contacts made inside Kabul, the Taliban's council of ministers met after the first wave of bombing yesterday and decided to avenge what it called "uncalled-for aerial strikes on the innocent people of Afghanistan".

The meeting's hardline chairman, Mullah Hassan Akhund, confirmed the Taliban's resolve to continue sheltering terrorist suspect Osama bin Laden. The regime's spokesman, Ameer Khan Muttaqi, said the ministers decided "to pay the US and Britain in the same coin".

No action was specified, but the Taliban's close links to Bin Laden's al Qaeda terrorist network guarantee the threat to US and British interests will be taken seriously.

Police and paramilitaries are guarding diplomatic and key business premises in Islamabad and troops have been brought in to prevent the spread of violent unrest that caused at least one death in other Pakistani towns and cities yesterday.

Tension has increased following a warning to American and British nationals from the Afghan Defence Council, an umbrella organisation that represents fundamentalist religious groups and pro-Taliban factions. The Council's leader, Maulana Abdul Rashid Ghazi, issued an ultimatum to Americans and Britons to leave Pakistan in 48 hours "if they value their lives".

Such talk is cheap here, but the authorities have been concerned over the violent rhetoric of religious leaders.

One, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, is currently under arrest on charges of incitement and last night two other mullahs given to declaring holy war and issuing bloodthirsty fatwas were put under house arrest. Maulana Samiul Haq, who has been recruiting for the Taliban, was held at Islamabad airport and Maulana Azam Tariq, a notorious rabble rouser, was under guard at his house outside Lahore.
