Any EZ series gun will be a good match (ie the 420EZ, 430EZ or 540EZ). You should be able to find them s/h at reasonable prices, or maybe even find the 540EZ new.

Any EOS speedlite will function in TTL-auto mode with the EOS 650, including the new "EX" series. IMHO, A-TTL is greatly over-rated and need not be considered, however, the older "EZ" series speedlites are generally less expensive. Don't bother searching for a speedlite with flash exposure compensation, because it won't work with the EOS 650.

When I bought my now ex-ewife a new 650 in 1986 I also bought her a 420EZ. It has an option for exp. comp. I use it now on my IIE when the built in flash is out of horsepower and it works quite well. I shot my daughter's weddding with it and made it the key light by about a 1/2 stop. It worked very well. Check the swap meets; it should be affordable there.

The 420 or 430 ez are your best bet - the newer 540 and 550 would be overkill, having features that the 650 can't access. Used a 420 on my 650 for years, great flash, never a problem.
