Solar Water Pumping Question

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

This question may be hard to answer. Our best solution may be to drill a well, but in the mean time.........How far and high is it possible to pump water with a solar pump (or should I say a 12 volt pump) from a well.? Doesn't have to be fast. I'd like to pump it into a storage tank or water tower, and at some future point let it drain back out again to fill a pond (which is yet to be dug). The down side is that it may be as much as 300 or 400 feet high. I also have no idea (other than constant flow) as to how to keep the water from freezing in the winter, once I get it up there. Thanks for your thoughts, Rick

I honestly don't know-but we are interested in getting a solar pump- we currently have a well that runs on electric, but as soon as we can we plan to switch to solar-we've built the pumphouse on a sloping southern exposure with this in mind-just ran out of cash but we will get there I don't know about pumping it up into a tank though-we are thinking pumping down into a cistern or 500 gallon water tank.

Kelly, can't you get the water to flow down with out a pump?

I don't recall the brand of pump but it's a twelve volt pump and is rated for 60psi. Translate that to 27"/psi or over 120' of verticle lift.
