Store discount cards

Do you use store discount cards? Jay C(owned by Kroger) and Super Value don't have them-yet-at least not where I shop. What do you think of them?

I live outside a small rural town in KS. That town has an IGA that has very reasonable prices. About 10 miles up the road is a town that has a Price Chopper, which uses a discount card. Each week, I just check the paper and see what's on sale where and go buy that! The discount card does get me some very good deals. The Price Chopper discount cards can now also be used at some other businesses (mostly up in Kansas City which is about a 45-50 mile drive for me). I haven't made use of that aspect of the card yet, but am pleased with the discounts I receive.

Our local Krogers has one, I did sign up and use it when I shop there. Normally I go to Aldi's first, then I only buy at Krogers what I absolutley can't get there. The only thing they will find out about me with this card is I am a tightwad. I don't buy anything unless it is on sale, marked down, or a clearance item. They haven't even sent me any offers by mail or anything. I must not fit their demographic group.

I'm with Melissa, I mostly buy the sale items, it's Brookshires here, we do Super 1 foods about once a month, which is owned by the same co. as Brookshires, but they don't require a card yet, I faked my name on it anyway.

Our local Sun-mart, used to be Hinky Dinky, used to have cards. They had you use them at the time of checkout and it would give you the discounts you saw on the shelf. Problems were... the discounts were the usual price you would find in other stores without the card, so I quit going as often to Sun Mart. Then I noticed I would go every two weeks for some items. Well, the off weeks I started getting sales cards, for specials or something I usually buy there. I often wonder what they do with all the data they can keep of what you buy, or how often you come in. They quit requireing a card last week. I was surprised and asked why. THey said some people were really upset by it, when they forgot the card at home, or travelers just passing through town would see the "card" price and argue a bit. Either way I am glad you do not need it anymore!!

Against my better judgement, I do use the Kroger's card. I balked when they first came out knowing their intentions were to track what we buy, for what reason, I'm not sure. As someone said, the prices with the card are usually what you get someplace else without a card and I feel they are a psychological thing to make you think you are getting a great deal. This is why they have at the bottom of the receipt how much you saved today with your "Krogers plus card". Unfortunately, Krogers has bought out most of the other chains here and are definitely a monopoly. That I don't like. They bought out our local IGA last year. The only other store around me is Save A lot and I've not shopped there much because I found they don't have as good a selection but maybe I should start going there more. I believe next time I shop I will check them out.
