EOS 30 vs EOS Elan7e differences

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

Can anyone tell me exactly what the differences between the EOS 30 QD 35mm SLR body and the Elan7E QD body are. Some sales guy told me that the 30 is more durable or built better. I have not been able to find any comparative specifications. I have also heard that they are the same exact bodies with just different names. Can anyone shed some light on this for me before I spend too much money on a 30 when the 7E is a better value or vise versa. Thanks

They are the same body. The Elan 7e is the name given to it in the US market, while everywhere else (I think...certainly europe and Japan...not sure about asia and oceania) it is the EOS 30. The Elan 7 (without eye control) is the EOS 33 elsewhere.

Sometimes there are minor Spec differences between cameras. For example, the A2e and EOS 5 were supposedly the same, but in M mode, the EOS 5 had a "matched needle" in the viewfinder, while the A2e had "+/-" indicators. This was a big deal to some. Also, the A2 (not sure about the A2e...) had an adjustable dioptre for the viewfinder, and no eye-control (A2 only). There was no non-eye control version available elsewhere. However, I am not aware of any such differences with the Elan 7e and the EOS 30. If anyone knows of any, I'd be interested to know.

In Japan the Elan 7E is called the EOS 7. EOS 30 is for everywhere else except N. American & Japan. I prefer the name EOS 7 but Canon's marketing people must think Americans prefer Elan 7.

You also might want to find a different camera store. Your sales guy is either clueless or trying to deceive you into spending more money if he's telling you that the EOS 30 and Elan 7E are different cameras.

Now that I think of it, if you are in North America, the EOS 30 is a gray market camera. Dealers bring in gray market cameras or lenses because they buy them cheaper overseas than the official product. Thus, gray market products are cheaper but lack the Canon USA or Canada warranty. I bought a gray market EF 200 2.8L USM lens. It's a wonderful lens but didn't come with a warranty card.

Don't walk, RUN away from that salesman. There's absolutely no difference. My guess is they got it cheap on the grey market and that way they can sell the equivalent body at a higher profit.

Then again it might just be the classic stupid salesman that doesn't know a thing but is paid to stand there and act knowledgable.

There is no "Elan 7E QD". It is more properly called "Elan 7E Date".

There are lots of EOS 30 owners on the Elan 7E mailing list [Membership 500+]. Perhaps you could ask there.

Alternatively, check the specs for yourself. A huge list of Elan 7E / EOS 30 /EOS 33 / EOS 7 links are in the group Bookmarks.

Cheers
