What was the aim of the American Psychological Association (APA) when it was first founded in 1892?

Article I of the first APA constitution read: "the object of the Association is the advancement of Psychology as a science. Those are eligible for membership who are engaged in this work." (Cattell, J. M. (1895). Report of the secretary and treasurer for 1894. Psychological Review, 2, 149-152.)
