Laura,

You take a file and place it in water. Stir the water with your hand ... (sorry, couldn't resist[g]).

Windows includes a little widget called "Sound Recorder" that can be used. Simply plug in a microphone (available from Radio Shack) and record to your heart's content.

Better programs are available to make long files, stereo files, higher-fidelity, etc. Check at shareware.com and download.com; some of them are freeware.

If the size of the sound files is important, e.g., if they are going to be emailed, then it might be worth considering formats such as .mp3 that consume a lot less space than the .wav format. Programs that record in .mp3 format are likely available via the sites mentioned by Commodore Poole.
