727 Plane Engine Catches Fire

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Fire broke out in one engine on an American Trans Air airliner as it landed, but the flames were quickly extinguished, an ATA spokeswoman said Sunday.

No one was injured.

Airport tower staff noticed smoke coming from the Boeing 727's tail engine late Saturday after Flight 478 arrived at Indianapolis International Airport from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., said ATA spokeswoman Angela Thomas.

Passengers remained on the Boeing 727 while the fire was put out, and the plane then taxied to its gate, airport spokesman Dennis Rosebrough said.

The aircraft was one of six 727s that ATA plans to retire by the end of October as the Indianapolis-based airline, the nation's tenth-largest, modernizes its fleet, Thomas said.

Also on Saturday, another ATA 727 flying from Fort Lauderdale to Chicago's Midway Airport was diverted to Indianapolis because of an engine problem, Thomas said. The plane made a non-emergency landing and passengers were put on another aircraft to Chicago.
