Operation Toasty Toes

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

A group of knitters are trying to get 2000 pair of knitted or crocheted slippers made and sent before Christmas to our servicemen and woman who serve aboard ships. The ships floors are cold and a nice pair of warm hand knitted or croched slippers would not only keep their feet warm but warm their hearts as well.

If you can help make however many pair as you can and get them in the mail by November 1, 2001, tuck a note inside with a message of hope and your name and address, who knows maybe you will make a new friend.

Send to: Operation Toasty Toes 5232 N. Ridge Road Madison, OH 44057

Congressman Steven C. LaTourette we get them to the servicepeople. Thank, Sally

Would they accept sewn slippers (of fleece or some warm stretchy stuff)?

Are they allowed to wear non-regulation clothing? Are there only certain colors that are allowed (such as black, navy, army green, grey, brown, etc.)?

Does it actually get THAT cold in the desert? Sincerely, Ernest

I don't think they have service men and women aboard ships in the desert?!?!

Sounds like a great project, wish I knitted!

Desert? If I'm not mistaken, this project was started some time ago for service people on thier way to Bosnia, and some of the Former Soviet republics that I'm not going to attempt to spell. (It gets cold there). I wonder if there is a certain pattern to use- If you don't knit-perhaps you can donate yarn or cost of materials to someone who can

Yes it does get very cold at noght in the dessert, no they are not sent only to ships, No it was not strted in regards to bosnia or anywhere cold. It was started by a loving gramma who wanted to raide a smile & warm a few "sole's of shipmates of her grandson. No special colors required, & yes they get to where non regs, on their off time. Many sleep in there slippers. It hass now grown over the l;ast 5 years to over 20,000 slippers, It is more than just slippers, it is morale. How amny of these service men & women do not have families to send them anything, How n]many wonder if their even appreciated for the job they do for their country, allowing us to sleep well knowing there are dedicated individuals ready to stand up for their nation at an instants notice. Yes there is a specific pattern, if you dont knit how about a kintting Loom, Theey are VERY easy to use & very addicting. Pattern info at http://members.tripod.com/operationtoastytoes8/index.htm With linx th the "Story" & linx to KNitting Looms
