Does Anyone Want to Get Comfrey?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We just bought our homestead in West Virginia, so it is time to start a cabin craft. On a limited basis, I can provide a comfrey leaf or 2, as a courtesy through the mail, if you send me a postage stamp. I could sell and mail 5 leaves for a dollar plus a stamp. I could also sell 12 root sections, mailed in a zip-lock on a damp paper towell for ten dollars, shipping and handling included. They grow like crazy (ours are next to the compost pile). Ann cut them back, and a week or 2 later you can't even tell. I dried a leaf on top of the charcoal grill (after grilling). When it was dry it simply fell off. In this instance I ground it with a mortar and pestle, and mixed in almond oil to make a salve to treat a nasty insect bite. We have heard that the plants need to be sheltered in winter, depending on the climate. We also successfully potted one of the plants for a friend, so they should hold up inside.E-Mail any requests.

Remember comfrey is very invasive if the roots are disturbed. Using a rototiller over it will just cause the roots to produce many more plants. Select the place where you will grow it carefully.

We are preparing our Homestead in Roane County, West Virginia. Right now we live in the Northeast part of Baltimore County MD. I will answer all privately, and we have 6 root sections left, to request. Please send a confirming e-mail once you have sent payment. Thank you all.

Rick, Do you think you could post some to the uk. I will post you separately. Thanks. Alison

Let me clarify my latest post. We have 6 to 10 DOZEN root sections left to offer. We are sending our po box out privately to those who wish to order, and asking for an confirmation by e-mail once the order is sent, to avoid taking to many orders. We are trying to offer, only ten, to make sure that we leave some to spread, but can handle a couple over that, and can also transfer extra orders to the gentleman who originated our crop.

Thanks again!

Since we are on the subject of mailing plant roots can anyone answer me, is there any restrictions for mailing by anyone plants and roots to other states with no objection from the agriculture department on spreading diease or bugs from state to state?

-- Mary (marwel@microserve.net), September 28, 2001.

I would hope that the 50 States can't individually restrict transport of agricultural goods. (our comfrey came from out of state). Anyone know for sure?

-- rick K (rick_122@hotmail.com), September 28, 2001.

For sure California and Hawaii are very particular about what kinds of agricultural products come in. Maybe there are others.
