RS-60E3 Remote Switch Vs RC-1 Wireless

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

I want to buy a Remote Switch. Which one should I buy RS60E3 or RC-1 wireless. Why one is preferred over the other. I plan to use it with ELAN IIe.

Thanks in Advance.

Well, what do you want the remote for?

The RS-60E3 is a small remote shutter release that's connected with a wire. The RC-1 is a small remote shutter release that's wireless - it uses infrared light. Both let you take photos from a distance from the camera without touching it.

The wired release has only a short wire whereas the wireless one operates at distances up to 5 metres. The wired release can be used anytime whereas the wireless one has a 4 minute timer. (strictly speaking, the camera ignores the wireless signal after that timeout period)

Which is better depends entirely, as I mentioned above, on what you want to do.

Also, to use the wireless you must be in front of or at an angle to the front of the camera, with the wired version you can be behind the camera.

That's basically true, though you could tape a bit of white paper or reflective material at an angle on the front of the camera and bounce the IR remote signal off that.

It wouldn't look very impressive and professional if you're trying to look impressive in front of a model in a studio, but it works. :)

Yep, I've done that. There are two problems (besides looking rather 'kludgy'): 1) if using white paper/card stock it's very important to maintain the ideal reflection angle because so much of the IR signal get diffused and the effective range is greatly reduced and 2) the only tape that would hold effectively (duct tape) left a nasty residue on the body (and REALLY looked kludgy).

I have both. I find that the RS-60E3 is better if I'm standing behind the tripod mounted camera and I just want to fire it without shaking it. The RC-1 is better when you want to get into the picture yourself.

The RC-1 can be used in place of the RS-60E3 and is more versital but occasionally gets finicky and doesn't fire for some reason. The RS- 60E3 is more reliable but some what limited in it's use. But then you still have the timer to quickly run in front of the camera.

Having both is better, but if I just had one it'd be the RC-1.

The RS-60E3 and RC-1 are not interchangable. In some cases, one does what the other cannot do, and vice versa, especially when used in combination with Mirror Lockup and Auto-Exposure Bracketing.

The situation has not improved with the new Elan 7E, see:
