Chimney or Stovepipe Wind Vane

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I'm looking for plans for a chimney or stovepipe wind vane. Their purpose is to prevent wind gusts from blowing down the chimney and spewing ashes and smoke into the house. They are roughly an elongated hemispherical shape - half is open, the other half is covered and has a vertical "tail". They sit atop the stovepipe and rotate freely in the wind.

These were used on every cabin at a church camp that was built in the 1920s or so. It is not the same as a chimney cap, and I have not seen them for sale. The ones at camp may have been homemade, I'm not sure.

Can someone recommend a book or website with further info or plans for a stovepipe wind vane? Thanks. Sandy
