I'm coming homegreenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread |
Yes!Got the OK from my boss this week to relocate back to the UK - working from home! Since I had the choice of anywhere I chose - Morpeth.
Well we've had our son accepted into King Edward's School so we have to live in NE61 or NE65.
Should be back before Christmas.
Let's hope the job lasts (Looking at our shares I'm not confident).

Looks like the Strawbeery clique is growing. Congrats, Pilgrim!
-- Anonymous, September 26, 2001
Welcome home Pilgrim - hope everything works out well for you.
KE is still a fine school, and the only downside could be your proximity to Screacher's place! ;o{)

Let's hope they get their fingers out in celebration tonight.:-))We'll have a proper welcome in the Strawberry some time.

Congrats Pilgrim :-) Morpeth is a nice town, with an amusing pub crowd

That's great news Pilgrim. Ever since you gave me a wink (I think that's right!) I've had my fnigers crosesd (wihch maeks tipyng blidyd hrad). Morpeth eh? Watch oot fer the imfamous Val ;-) The Angler's at Wheldon Bridge could be a central meeting point for you, Val, True and me.

And you will be able to visit Ashington!
-- Anonymous, September 26, 2001
Great news Pilgrim, look forward to seeing you again.

Thanks for the kind wishes. I can't wait to get back. Screach - Mrs P reckons she'll never see me again, what with you being nearby. I'm glad to see she's set the expectations for me :o))Floridan, I'm an Ashington lad (Well North Seaton Colliery). My mother and my in-laws still live in Ashington so I'll be there weekly. I'm still a paid up member of the Ashington and Ellington Social Club. Been known to visit the Northern quite a bit too.
Now I've just got to get some tickets sorted out. :o))

Welcome, welcome, Pilgrim !!!Morpeth is truly a smashing little market town, friendly and only about 30 minutes from SJP down the A1.
(Watch out for the speed cameras, mind. Just before the Hepscott, Bedlington Station turnoff all the way down to past Stannington.)
And, yeay. Angler's Arms is indeed an enjoyable watering hole - we'll all make it one of these days, eh ?
val.

In my youth, Pilgrim, I thought that Ashington was the centre of the universe. Unfortunately, the loss of the mines has had a dramatic effect on the place. Petty crime seems to be endemic. A few years back, someone stole the radio from the rented car. Since then, I have tended to restrict my visits to day time rather than overnight, usually taking our relatives to the Bersford Arms. My wife's aunt lives in Barmoor.

If any of you lot have parents still with us ask them if they remember the Fergusons in Ashington, my grandparents lived there and me mam and Uncles brought up their. Mam Leah, Uncles Jim and Robert.

Congrats on the homecoming Pilgrim. One of these days I will make it myself.

That`s fantastic news Mr. P! (:o)

Maybe you guys can help me. I'm looking to rent for 6 months in Morpeth while we have a look around. If anyone knows names of letting agencies or even of a property (min 3 beds)to let in NE61 or NE 65 please let me know.

Sighs of envy, Pilgrim. Talking of pilgrims, my annual pilgrimage is always to around that area, near Longhorsley, but I'll have to wait till April for that:-(. Must check out the Angler's at Weldon though. What's it like about letting kids in?

Pilgrim - my mate's family (Rigg) are from Ashington, but he's relocated to Morpeth.Found these web sites useful when I was looking at places in the NE...
http://www.rookmatthewssayer.co.uk/ - offices in Morpeth town centre
http://www.pattinson.co.uk/
http://www.northumbria-cumbria.co.uk/ - very goodRenting is still expensive, but expect to pay around £110,000 for a modern 2/3 bed in Morpeth, older 3 bed houses are more - £150k+. There's a great curry house up some steps in the town centre...gets packed at 8pm. Also a loud nightclub beside some Elizabethan hotel (lots of black laquered wood) again in the town.

Thanks Bobby, I'll try them.Aah curry! :o))

Morpeth is not in the Indian subcontinent. The availability of fish and chips and a good pork sandwich with pease pudding and also steak and kidney pie from Andersons or the old Porkie Ermanns of Ashington is much more important.

You've obviously been away a long time, floridian.

Can anyone tell me why Stannington has that 50mph max zone? It's a right pain in the backside.
-- Anonymous, September 27, 2001
Cos it's a really badly designed bit of road. They did it on the cheap and there are crossovers where there have been loads of accidents rather than a flyover for the traffic joining/leaving the A1.
-- Anonymous, September 27, 2001
They had a couple of fatal accidents there a couple of years ago Bobby.Actually, the money has now been authorised for an underpass/exit ramp(I believe) but it has been put on hold because of planning objections from local residents.
No pleasing some folks!
-- Anonymous, September 27, 2001
Aye, and those cameras have caught 655 speeding motorists in each of the last 3 months if the signs are to be believed! I hope I won't be one of them, travelling that stretch of road every time I go to work (which is not too often, in case anybody wanted to get a dig in).
-- Anonymous, September 27, 2001
But motor fatalities happen everywhere - surely all that happens is keep it under 50 until you get past the gatso cameras, then everyone puts their foot down. Isn't that more dangerous? Happens in west London - the M4 has an elevated section near Brentford's Griffin Park, drivers keep it down until it expands into 3 lanes again, then there's an almighty nip and tuck to be the first to speed into the virginal tarmac ahead.
-- Anonymous, September 28, 2001
Bobby, actually those camers do work at Stannington. There are two crossings and there are cameras in both directions on both. That is where the accidets happen - the rest is bog-standard dual-carriageway. Everybody slows down for the junctions, and as one who often needs to cut across the DC to join it, even with a nippy car and a heavy right foot, it makes things a lot easier and indeed safer. Mind some folks are still waiting to cross, having been waiting since their annual jaunt on August Bank Holiday ;-)
-- Anonymous, September 28, 2001
I know they work, but I think there's more effective ways of traffic 'calming' (cars get excited and agitated, like). Say, having driving tests every 10 years, compulsory advanced tests within 2 years, engine capacity restrictions / BHP restriction. It's a bit daft to fine people £60 and 3pts for going 1mph over the limit (it does happen). As Rev Blair said, education, education, educ-nah, sod it. Let's make more league tables...

Can I have my thread back now please? :o))
