Barley straw container for fish pond

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I want to try barley straw in my pond to control algae but don't want to just plunk down a bale of straw. Anyone have any ideas of how I might make some kind of floating mat or basket that would be attractive to look at while it is doing the work?

I though people just tied cement blocks to the bales and tossed them in.

just pluck it in,, it will soak up the water, and will sink,, which is what you want. Make sure the string arent cut,, or you will have a bunch floating to the surface

The pictures I have seen of ponds where these are used showed the bales along the shore line with the tops above the water and the bottoms below. I know the benefit comes from the hydrogen peroxide that is produced through decomposition but I thought they had to have their top above the water. From your postings, sounds like that is not so so I guess I will just plunk a bale into the pond with a rope attached so I can drag it out when it needs to be replaced. Thanks for the info.

Pantyhose.

I am not joking. I know of lagoon operators who have tried this method and use pantyhose.

Am looking for a source for barley straw - in large quantities.

The prices ranges currently on the Net are about 9.95 to 29.95 per bale - can you believe it? And that's for the 8x4x4-INCH bales!

Help!
