Just want to share happy news of baby horse

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We have been waiting for over a month for our mini mare to have her foal...our very first baby. The lady who gave her to us had no idea of when she was bred, so the wait was all the more difficult! Been checking her milk and udder daily, with no signs of imminent birth. Well, a half hour ago my husband was leaving for work and I heard him yelling outside...raced to the door and found Lacy out there with her newborn filly, everybody up & dry and moseying about! Baby nickered at me and my heart just melted. Everything looks great so far, but daylight & the vet visit will tell for sure. Just wanted to share this with some folks who would appreciate it. Thanks! (P.S. Mama is a silver appy and daddy was pure black, and baby looks just like her mama.)

Congratulations! Please keep us posted! My dream is to eventually raise miniature horses here (along with my Angora bunnies, laying chickens, and hopefully soon Angora goats!) So your post really made my day!!!!

That's really neat Shannon. It's amazing how they can just do it themselves most of the time. Please post a picture so we can enjoy her all the more! What's her name going to be????

Great! And without you or the vet having to intervene!

Congratulations Shannon, have you picked a name yet?

Thanks, everybody! I don't know how to post a picture here. As for her name, well, her mama is registed as Chantilly Lace, and we call her Lacy. So, baby will be registered as "Lacy Lil' Thing", and I don't know what her day-to-day name will be. It just hasn't come to me yet!

How wonderful!! Bet the wait was worth it. It's especially nice that you didn't have to assist at the birth. A friend of ours raises horses and she is always sending us e-mail pictures of her babies. Horses are such pretty animals whether they are babies or adults.

I know just how you feel! My mare had a colt a while ago and it's so much fun watching him!
