Goat milking question

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hi ya'll. Due to circumstances that were unavoidable I've had to skip several milking times and milked only once a day. One day not at all. Her milk production is way down. Is there any way to get it back to what it was. Thanks for your help. Blessings Peggy

Start milking three times a day for awhile. That usually helps alot. And increase (gradually) her grain a little.

when did she kid? If it was in Feb or March then she is near the ned of her lactation and is drying off. Its hard to get them back, but you could try 3 x's a day although I've found in my experiences it doesn't help much. We tried using fennelgreek seeds sprinkled on their grain to help along with a little dill seed. hope this helps. the fennel helped some.

Bernice, she surprised us with a kid in the third week of June. We just gave her kid away last week. She is a saanan that usually gives 5 to 6 qts a day. Now shes down to 1. I'll try the fennel and dill. What we've done in the past is to leave the kids on the doe and stall them up at night and milk once a day. Never had a problem but this time the kid is a real jumper. She jumped every fence/stall we put her in. We even tried to stall up the doe but she jumped that gate too. She's a cute little critter but really put a kink in our usual procedure. Thanks for the help. Blessings Peggy
