Taliban down unmanned spy plane

Saturday, September 22, 2001 at 20:30 JST ISLAMABAD — Afghanistan's Taliban government confirmed Saturday that an unmanned spy plane was shot down over northern Afghanistan in the morning.

"A spy plane was shot down in Samangan Province but we can not say whose plane it was," Taliban spokesman Mullah Abdul Hayee Mutmaeen told the Pakistan-based Afghan Islamic Press (AIP).

Mutmaeen said Afghan airspace has been closed for all aircraft and the plane was shot down because it entered Afghan airspace without prior permission. (Kyodo News)
