Anarchy as Taliban lose control

By Ahmed Rashid

LAW and order was breaking down in Kabul yesterday as Taliban soldiers and poverty-stricken civilians carried out armed daylight robberies and looted houses left empty by people who have fled.

In many areas of the Afghan capital, discipline among the Taliban appeared to be collapsing ahead of an expected American assault.

"Armed men are entering people's homes under the guise of checking to see if they have arms, are watching a film or listening to music [both banned activities]," said one resident.

"The owner of the house lets them in because he has nothing to hide. Then he and the male family members are rounded up and the women are forced to hand over cash or jewellery."

Another complained: "I have lost everything." Crime was almost stamped out in Kabul after the Taliban seized it in 1996. They cut the limbs off thieves or hanged them from lamp posts.

Bringing law and order back to an anarchic country was one of the main reasons for the Taliban's early popularity. The breakdown of law and order demonstrates the rapid collapse of the militia's hierarchy.

It appears that soldiers are no longer obeying their officers.

Hey dinglebeanie - ya can't have the bad guy looking more beatific, attractive and innocent than the good guy. Watch the target - damn near gave him a halo!

Back to the drawing board.

Sorry if I was too harsh. I am enjoying your efforts.

Wish I had the skills - I might aim for a pieta style approach at the moment, though I see you've got more of the testoserone flow thang. Most great art through the ages has been political {including religious} propaganda & since we are in the midst of a war of words, I am interested that we don't have a dominant visual icon yet. Possibly it is an artifact of the speed and bombardment of visual images that we are subjected to, but I don't think so.

You must understand that KOFE’a anus binds up at the very image of a pissed-off Uncle Sam. Calm down son, the IRS will get you soon enough.

KoFE,

Would you explain the King of Free Estmates thing to me?

I've been avoiding a great deal of the images that have been coming out - they sear themselves on my mind, and cause an emotional reaction which is hard to balance out.

I'll explain my motive for the pieta format {Virgin Mary mourning over Christ's lifeless body}. First, it is a primal archetype - instantly recognizable on a subconcious level. Who doesn't remember the photograph of that girl at Kent State, or the fireman carrying the lifeless body of a child after the Oklahoma bombing? We relate to the grieving figure, and the courage to overcome fear - believing in a recovery, resolve, or resurrection. We also have to remember what motivates us in the darkness. In a way, maybe your Liberty there is getting warmer, but I don't really get the sting of innocence lost.

damn flora, you're a hard woman to please.

Flora--

For me there is a dominant physical icon but it is dynamic not static. (damned video age) It's the image of that tower collapsing down on itself. I can't get it out of my mind.

The reality of it is bad enough but it constantly rears its ugly metaphorical head---everything collapsing; civilization, humanity, the illusion of reality.

You know, Lars, I took a break and thought of that when I was just wandering around. It was a defining moment of my lifetime.
