Would you fly in the next three weeks?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unk's Wild Wild West : One Thread

For months now I have been looking forward to visiting the US for first time ever.Shannon,Ireland to Boston & then out into the country. But now I'm not so sure.

what's the reality? Are people still travelling to conferences and meetings where flying is almost the only way to reach their destination?

Answers

The reality hasn't really changed chris just the perception. Come on over and enjoy.

Hell no.

Sure, why not. You in Ireland should be aware that you can't put your life on hold because of Terrorism. Would you recommend that I not go to Ireland because of "the troubles" you all have been having for the last twenty or so years? Being of 75% Irish ancestry, I really look forward to seeing your country, hopefully in the not to distant future.

-- E.H.Porter (just.wondering@about.it), September 20, 2001.

Porter is right. Life is to be enjoyed.

I believe there is an armed Marshall on every flight now. It's probably safer to fly now than ever before.

I forgot to add one thing, Chris. If you are going to purchase your ticket in advance, be sure to spend an extra couple of dollars for flight insurance. With the possibility of some airlines going bankrupt, it might be wise to check the box that insures your money back if that happens.

-- Betsy Ross (Red White @nd .blue), September 20, 2001.

Chris:

Been there and done that. I flew on the 13 of Sep. Will be going again in the next three weeks.

One note; American has annouced to cut costs that they will no longer provide food service in coach and will curtail it in first class. Other airlines will follow. Take food. :)

Best Wishes,,,,

$25 ROUNDTRIP from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Come on let's go!

BTW...please arrive at LEAST two hours before depature time. (Like who wants to do THAT?(Z probably checks in FOUR hours before departure time)LOL)

-- (um@nevermind.), September 20, 2001.

There goes that lying sack of shit Z, bullshitting us again as always. No one flew on the 13th except military. We're not impressed by you always trying to act like some kind of VIP, we know you're a washed up senile old fart sitting at home feeding squirrels.

-- lol (Z is @ fucking. loser), September 20, 2001.

lol,

I think you're confused. A lot of people flew on the 13th -- mostly those who had been stranded on the 11th. They were permitted to fly home on that day.

Do try to get your facts straight.

-- Stephen M. Poole (smpoole7@bellsouth.net), September 20, 2001.

Get YOUR facts straight Poole Fool. Most stranded people were taken home by bus or train. A couple of attempts to fly commercial planes were made on the 13th, but they were stopped again when more suspects were found boarding the planes. Dumbass.

My commute takes me past Phoenix Sky Harbour, one of the busiest in the USA, place is still like a ghost town, if I am lucky, I will see one plane take off or land in the time it takes me to drive up to and around the airport. before 9/11, I'd see 7 or 8 with many more lined up either on the runway or in the sky on approach. I still don't think security is what it should be at our airports, so fly in at your own risk, I would not!

EH.As was pointed out above there is often a difference between reality and perception. Here in Southern Ireland I actually feel safer from terrorist bombs than I did in the UK.Many of the televised riots are relatively small scale affairs in low cost housing developments.

Here in the South guns are just not around ..so much so that it can be difficult to get cartridges unless you are into target shooting.People are not interested.

Thanks for the advice everyone..especially about the food !

Some good irony......

I've avoided flying since 1979. Would just rather drive. Wendy talked me into to flying to the Bahama's on 10/4. We made the reservations a month ago. I'm going but I'm not near as excited as I should be.

I'm still checking to see if there's anyway we can drive......

Eat Shit:

I will break my pledge to never discuss things with a moron. Do they let you on planes. Won/t be here for your witty retort.

Not many planes flew on the 13th, but some did. I was on the second commercial flight to leave Sea-Tac. There wasn't a terrorist threat in the civilized part of the country. Three left for sure and there were two more possibles. The purpose was to get stranded passengers home. There must have been very few flights. We saw no other planes in the air and none at our destination. We were at 39,000 ft. The only contrails we saw were much higher. That is military space as I recall. No wait for take-off and none for landing.

Of course, it is clear that you don't fly all that much. Some of us have jobs that require air travel. Indeed, some of us have jobs. ;<)))

Best Wishes,,,,,

Yes, Chris. I would fly without hesitation, even into Logan Int'l. :) Hell, I drive in Manhattan. Flying, even in the light of last week's events, is infinitely more safe than driving on the streets of NYC.

It's a good time to come to the U.S., Chris. We are revved up, our love for this country has been revived. Our perception of the incredibly high standard of living the vast majority of Americans enjoy has been brought more into focus for each of us (as tragedy often forces us to look at what we have lost and what we retain, and experience gratitude for what remains). And kindness seems to be on the uptick.

If you have specific questions about the U.S., travel within the country, etc., please don't hesitate to ask. Post them here or send email.

One small note: You make call it humorous or just interesting. When we flew on 13 Sep 01, we had already been told that all knives and such things would be confiscated [this included plastic knives; not that I usually carry disposable flatware]. We went through our belongings and packed everything that was "pointy’ into our checked luggage.

About an hour out, they served a meal. It came with one utensil. Guess what that was? We weren't the only folks to laugh.

Best Wishes,,,,

Hey wait a damn minute, isn't Microsoft based in the Seattle area?

Free:

You are asking the wrong person. I don't keep up with these things.

As I remember, the Holy Temple is in Medina [rode by it in a boat but have never been there so I could be wrong]. The priests dwell in Redmond.

Still, like God, Microsoft is everywhere.

Z, since you have a reputation as a chronic bullshitter you're going to have to prove it. Let's have all the details of your itinerary for that flight. It can be verified, and you proven once again to be lying out your ass.

Sorry, I have gone back to my policy of not talking to pimply-faced morons. Yeah, I know that the high school youth are the future of our country and all of that. Still, policy is policy.
