searching for bathtub fixtures

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I have a friend with a claw foot tub with 2 seperate faucets for hot & cold. These faucets need to be replaced. Can anyone suggest a reasonable &/or used faucet supplier? Thanks. Everything so far has run over $200. I told her I KNEW someplace that could help!

I see clawfeet sometimes in antique stores--wonder if they are interchangeable. Saw some recently 2/$35. I know you can buy new. But these were great!

Lehman's & Renovater's Supply both carry them, but are expensive. I'd be interested if someone knows an inexpensive source. We have a claw foot tub and our shower part needs replacing (it leaks like crazy and cannot be fixed). We've only seen ones $200 and up too.

Beth, we installed a "pre-owned" claw foot tub last Oct. and had a devil of a time with faucets-if you go to suppliers/chain store they want an arm and a leg. I ended up going to a locally owned plumbing suppy store in the next county and they pulled one off the shelf for $35! Since then I saw faucets at a hardware store in another county that caters to local farmers/Amish community. My suggestion is to try independent stores- good luck. Another thought-I know some cities- I know Louisville KY, does have salvage companys that have all kinds of old stuff- you might try one of those. Good Luck

Are you sure that they are two separate faucets? The ones that we have had has a 3 3/8 or 5/8 spread. Ours has a porcelin handle for hot and cold that has the words in black letters. I just ordered a new faucet last week. I believe the company name is Barclay. It was only $75. Of course I could have ordered one for $200+.

I replaced the 2 separate faucets on our pedastal sink also, I found them at a local lumber yard for $20 each. I dont think that they would work for a tub, because they mount on top of the sink and the tub would be side mounted.

I dont know if this is any help, but if the faucet might be what you are looking for I could send a picture when it gets here and give the company name. I hope it will come next week. Tami in Wi

Maybe it would easier to find a whole old tub with the faucets all ready left on. You could then take them off for your tub. Call your local "junk" man, not a fancy antique dealer. You just might find what you want...also look at garage sales, second hand stores, old houses that are being torn done. I usually find what I want if I just keep asking people everywhere I go. Good Luck !!!

I found my fixtures at a small town hardware store - locally owned, and operated. They carry all kinds of stuff that big name chain stores don't. I also got my pressure canner there and my water bath canner. When I went into a local Ace Hardware for those items, the sales clerk looked at me like I had come from another planet. Support the small locally owned and operated hardware stores! I had to travel thirty miles one way to get to the store, so while there, I bought several items that we needed and the owner will even order special items like replacement parts for wood stoves, etc. I enjoyed the visit and found out where I could get a donkey as well. Many of the older stores are barely hanging on with all the Home Depots and Lowe's out there, so it was nice to help out a little bit to keep them in business.
