old herb book recommendation

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

With all the books folks have on herbs (and I could put a list of my favorites up here, because you need a number of them.... and my favorite homeopathy books), as an herbalist, i find a particular old book to be of value. it is basically an old materia medica called A MODERN HERBAL by Mrs. M. Grieve. You can order them new in paperback in two volumes for $30 or so, but I goa Barnes & Noble special edition for $15 bucks, and you should be able to special order it, browse it first, and decide if you want to buy it or not. What is nice about it as a reference is that you can go look up things that you might not readily find in the medicinal herb books, as they aren't the most common ones to use. One day I sat in my yard and looked up plants that I had that i don't think of as herbal/medicinal: Virginia Creeper, periwinkle. It is also nice because it has some "old time" drawings, history, cultivation, etc....sort of an encyclopedia. I go here when I can't find a plant in my other books, or I want more information. Just wanted to recommend it...

Hi Marcee, I just checked my favorite place to purchase books, Half.com. You can get some great books. I have gotten a lot of older books that I was interested in that were out of print. They have several copies of this book, starting at 4.96. Just in case anyone wants to purchase one. :-D

Does it have morning glory in it? Here in Utah, morning glory is a weed that takes over the world. It is wild. I understand if you have something growing like crazy in your yard, then perhaps, it is meant for you. Thanks

Hi Kim, I agree with you. I get almost all my herbal books from Half.com. I even got my herbal PDR from them and saved LOTS of money. Hi Swanlady, I live in Missouri and we have morning glory growing all over here too. I've always heard that it's poisonous, but, if anyone knows different, let me know!
